Through an institutionalized Twelve-Step Program heavy on Bible study, he was supposed to emerge heterosexual, ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his faith in God for his brush with sin. Instead, even when faced with a harrowing and brutal journey, Garrard found the strength and understanding to break out in search of his true self and forgiveness.
 
By confronting his buried past and the burden of a life lived in shadow, Garrard traces the complex relationships among family, faith, and community. At times heart-breaking, at times triumphant, this memoir is a testament to love that survives despite all odds.

Courageous. Poignant. Revealing. A Must Read. . .

An amazing book on so many levels! In this memoir, Garrard Conley shares intimate details of his adolescent and early adult years in his quest to understand and accept himself. His journey is made far more difficult by his fundamental Christian upbringing and his parents and community's unwillingness to accept him as he is. This leads him to ex-gay therapy which is far more harmful than helpful. Anyone who reads this book will no longer be able to accept such therapy as an acceptable treatment. Conley's willingness to expose the intimate details of his life brings the reader into his life, pulling for him to find self-love in a world that makes it difficult to do.

On another level, the book has incredible writing. The vivid descriptions, the limited but effective dialogue, the changes in time, and the development of the key people in his life at that time show Conley's incredible writing skills. Admittedly, at times I wanted to skip the descriptions in order to discover what happened next in his life. However, the quality of the writing kept me reading every word.

I will look forward to reading more by Conley!

Gut-wrenching

I am writing this immediately after finishing this difficult book. Boy Erased is the author's story of struggle. He was raised in a strict Baptist home and community. His father was ordained as a Baptist minister while he was in college. And the author is gay. He is outed to his parents by a predatory college student. His parents force him into ex-gay counseling with the evangelical based Love in Action (LIA). One tenant of LIA is that gay people are damaged. Abuse is assumed and can be traced back for generations in a family. Find and confront the abuse, accept God in your life and Boom! Cured! Somehow he comes out alive. Mostly.

The book moves back and forth between Mr. Conley's childhood and adolescence and young adulthood. He has a girlfriend and the church community assumes they will marry. He tries to fake the relationship and cannot. In college he tries to both find himself and hide from himself. He is victimized by a fellow student. When his parents find out he is gay, his father threatens to cut off financial and emotional support unless the author enters treatment and is cured. Parts of the book describe the "counseling" that occurs at LIA, a 12-step based program. Mr. Conley tries to genuinely embrace the program and then tries to fake it before ultimately walking out. The tipping point for him is a Gestalt empty chair exercise in which he is encouraged to express anger at his father. Anger that he does not feel.

The richest parts of the book for me are when Mr. Conley tries to describe his conflicted feelings. What does it feel like to love your parents, know they love you, but also know that they cannot accept who you are? To know that they think you are diseased? What does it feel like to never be honest about yourself with your friends? What does it feel like to love God, apply the scriptures to your life, and then feel abandoned by God and the church when you need them most? My criticism of the book is that I wish these areas had been explored and fleshed out more. That said, Mr. Conley's recovery is still a work in progress and the confusion and mixed feelings are real. I would love to read what he would write about himself in 10 or 20 years.

I would definitely recommend this book. Hopefully it will make us all think more. Words and actions hurt and the damage can take a long time to scab over. Scars remain. Let's be kind to each other folks!

This might have been my story

That could have been me. When I came out decades ago, my Mom lovingly suggested that I go hear an ex-gay speaker at our church. I was grown, married, and divorcing. Not being reliant on parents makes it easier to resist such invitations, as does being older. Moreover, I had the support of a loving wife who would have skinned me alive. But about the book. . . .

This was more of a history book for me, perhaps because of my vantage point. I still found it moving, but not earth shattering, as some have described. Garrard's gift, and what made the book wonderful for me, is his failure to demonize anyone -- himself (more or less), his parents, or God. His ability to see the dignity in his mother and father -- very different folks -- and the dignity in others that he encounters on his journey is one of the special qualities in this memoir.

It wasn't my story, but his writing is adept enough that he takes you on his journey with him, and I was engrossed enough that for a few hours, his story was mine. I recommend the book, even for someone who, like me, passed these milestones some time ago.

About the Author
Julie Moir Messervy is a noted landscape and garden designer, author, lecturer, and principal of Julie Moir Messervy Associates in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Messervy designed the Toronto Music Garden in collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and gardens for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Garden, Columbus, Ohio. She is a columnist for "Fine Gardening "magazine and author of three previous books.
She received her BA from Wellesley College and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's School of Architecture, where she received her Master of Architecture and Master in City Planning degrees. She trained with the eminent Japanese garden master Kinsaku Nakane in Kyoto, Japan.

You will be so glad you bought this!

This wonderful book truly inspires gardeners and do-it-yourself landscapers. It is full of unusual, exciting, and achievable ideas for lawns, beds, pools, pavings, and more. The acknowledgements say that the wealth of photos and plans were submitted by many designers and then selected by Julie Messervy and her staff at JMMDS (Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio). Perhaps that partly explains the enormous variety of ideas in this book, but anyone familiar with Ms. Messervy’s work and her many other books will not be surprised to find so many kinds of beautiful ideas for designing outdoor spaces.

A few of the great design ideas in the book are things that I have heard of before—like the importance of focal points—but many others are new, tremendously helpful concepts to me, like the advisability of dividing your space into zones. I also love the way the design ideas cover a wide spectrum, from a dramatically unusual meditative labyrinth of sedum, riverstone, and raked earth to more traditional treatments of gates, walls, fences, etc.

The before and after pictures of the DIY backyard would inspire anyone, and I also particularly love the ideas for side yards, garages, and driveways, the “green ideas that work,” and above all, the way this book suggests things that I can actually achieve—building, creating, and maintaining my landscape on my own.

And now I’m totally inspired to have chickens for pest control!

Her designs and those pictured are a real feast for landscape designers. I will refer to this book regulalry when designing. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Dr. Ann C. Wintergerst is professor of TESOL at St. John's University in New York City where she established and directed the university's first English as a Second Language Program. She has published books and articles on culture, the maintenance of heritage language, learning styles, classroom discourse, writing, and assessment. Ann holds a B.A. in German from St. John's University; an M.A. in TESOL, an Ed.M. in Applied Linguistics, and an Ed.D. in TESOL, all from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. Born in Germany, she is bilingual in German and English. Joe McVeigh is a specialist in English language teaching. For more than 25 years he has taught at universities in the U.S. including Caltech, the University of Southern California, and Middlebury College. He has lived and worked in countries including China, India, Chile, and Hungary. He has taught students from more than 50 countries. In addition to writing, he consults for organizations, trains teachers, speaks at conferences and workshops, edits ESL books, and maintains a website on issues of interest to teachers of ESL. He lives and works in Middlebury, Vermont, U.S.A.

Excellent Resource for Teachers

This is an excellent go-to book for teachers looking for concrete ways to teach culture in the language classroom.

I often use this book as I am looking for ways to design lessons that will demonstrate the effect that culture has on communication.

Insights and anecdotes throughout the book will help teachers understand their role in teaching culture, and classroom activities are interactive.

Best Teacher Resource

I have used "Tips for Teaching Culture" with several MA/PhD in TESOL & Composition classes. Our students are practicing teachers and are particularly interested in the ways in which culture and cross-cultural communication could be taught and practiced effectively. This is one of the few books that does this. It offers numerous examples of cross-cultural (mis)communication from various classrooms. It also focuses on major cross-cultural communication topics and issues and the research that clarifies them. In their course evaluations, students have praised this book as accessible, useful, and relevant. They find the cross-cultural issues they have encountered well presented and illustrated. Informative and readable, personally significant and easily applicable, this book offers a perfect balance between new and known, theoretical and practical, cultural and linguistic. Presenting culture in the context of language, education, social responsibility, nonverbal communication, identity, cultural shock and adjustment, it generates lively discussions where participants make sense of their personal experiences in relation to broader social and other factors.

really is useful!

As a World History teacher, I am always on the prowl for materials that will both engage my high school students and deepen their understanding of the world and its history. This chart works on both levels. It has color-coded designations of the major empires, at a glance showing contemporaneity for various time periods, and has accessible, brief, and relevant highlights through time. Students of varying levels should appreciate this chart, prodding some to learn more about something found within it and others to contextualize for the big picture. In a word, it's aptly named "useful."

Very well done Timeline-of-History Wall Chart

I keep this 60x90 cm wall chart right next to me at the computer where I write and refer to it frequently. It has an amazing amount of detail, yet portrayed in a visually appealing and straight-forward style. The vertical axis on the portrait-orientation chart is the time line, divided into centuries and historical ages (an inset gives a smaller-scale view of geological history back to the Big Bang). The horizontal axis is divided into geographical regions. Lots of photos share the space with helpful text notations. Lines and arrows allow you to follow migrations and cultural movements, such as Germanic Tribes moving in on Rome in waves and throwing the Western Roman Empire into the Dark Ages. There are even a couple of inset boxes giving interesting speculation about future events. It's a great tool for getting a visual overview of the most significant periods of history, how they relate in terms of time scale and location, as well as how they transitioned. Highly recommended.

Time on a Chart

I'm a history lover and I suppose I'd always unconsciously considered that events happened linearly--not simultaneously. When I finally realized that the world and its civilizations developed at the same time but separately, I knew I needed some resource to help me picture these developments. This chart has been a very effective learning tool for me to carefully place what I learn into the accurate time period along with its companion world developments. Thanks so much-- from one chartmaker to another!!
