A New Lease of Life for Marxist Analysis

Dr. Donald Donham's extremely readable account and analysis of what could easily have been a most boring subject matter is a must read. Not only for those Marxists tired of orthodoxy of all types, but also for those non-Marxists who never tire of bashing Marxists. Set amongst the Maale people of Ethiopia, this book takles a seemingly simple question that has been the bane of materialist analysis for as long as it has been in existence. The question itself is posed in the following way: Is the table top existing because of the four legs that hold it up? Or, is it equally reasonable to say that the four legs are "legs" only because the table top meaningfully allows them to be so. Else they would merely be four pieces of wood, and that too skewed since it is the top that makes then perfectly vertical!
The book deals with the question of how the Maale organize their labor and brings together liberal economics and Marxist anthropological theory together in a positive manner. It shows how the first set of theories have limitations that do not allow them to solve certain Maale "paradoxes." On the other hand the latter set of theories need to be reshaped in the light of ethnographic data from Third World countries and peoples such as the Maale.
A superb, humanistic and many times humorous book. Always with both feet firmly planted on the ground, the author also shows how Marxism necessarily must participate in the drama that is life. Thus, he successfully attempts to integrate the literary genres of Comedy, Tragedy, Irony and Romance into his clearly argued Marxist analysis. I will be using this book in my graduate level seminar on Social Theory.

Ever feel like you just can't get ahead with the bills? You're not alone. More than half of Americans believe the American dream has become impossible for most people to achieve. And two-thirds think this goal will be even harder for the next generation. (One reason for the gloominess--average full-time income has fallen 15 percent since 1975.) All this has Benjamin Friedman worried. In his hefty, 549-page tome, The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth, the acclaimed Harvard economist and advisor to the Federal Reserve Board says economic stagnation is bad for the moral health of a nation. Friedman, a former chair of Harvard's economics department, argues that economic growth is vital to social and political progress. Witness Hitler's Germany. Without growth, people look for answers in intolerance and fear. And that, Friedman warns, is where the U.S. is headed if the economic stagnation of the past three decades doesn't soon reverse. It's not enough for gross domestic product to rise, he says. Growth also has to be more evenly distributed. The rich shouldn't be the only ones getting richer.

Friedman's arguments are provocative but at times lack rigor. In his comparisons of various countries, he offers no objective data to measure their levels of social progress, relying instead on his own--sometimes selective--interpretation of historical events. He glosses over the fact that China, where the economy has grown sevenfold since 1978, has seen little political change in that time. He also acknowledges that the Great Depression--which brought Americans together to achieve great social and political progress--tends to disprove his theory. Friedman makes a good case that the economy sometimes influences social movements, but the jury is still out on exactly when and how that happens. --Alex Roslin

Starred Review. This probing study argues that, far from fostering rapacious materialism, economic growth is a prerequisite for the creation of a liberal, open society. Harvard economist Friedman, author of Day of Reckoning: The Consequences of American Economic Policy in the 1980s, contends that periods of robust economic growth, in which most people see their circumstances palpably improving, foster tolerance, democracy and generous public support for the disadvantaged. Economic stagnation and insecurity, by contrast, usher in distrust, retrenchment and reaction, as well as a tightfisted callousness toward the poor and—from the nativism of 19th-century Populists to the white supremacist movement of the 1980s—a scapegoating of immigrants and minorities. Exploring two centuries of historical evidence, from income and unemployment data to period novels, Friedman elucidates connections between economic conditions, social attitudes and public policy throughout the world. He offers a nuanced defense of globalization against claims that it promotes inequality and, less convincingly, remains optimistic that technology will resolve the conflicts between continual growth and environmental degradation. Friedman's progressive attitude doesn't extend to his cautious approach to promoting growth in America; a critic of Bush's tax cuts and deficits, he advocates fiscal discipline to free savings for investment, along with educational initiatives, including "school choice," to boost worker productivity. Friedman, a Harvard economist well known for his criticism of Reagan-era fiscal policies, employs broad historical and geographical perspectives to argue that a nation's democratic institutions flourish best in times of stable economic growth. Americans, on the whole, are richer and freer than just about anyone else in the world, but the gap between rich and poor is higher today than it has been at almost any other time since the Great Depression, and most Americans don't feel better off than they did five or six years ago. Drawing comparisons with emerging economies, and citing authorities as diverse as Adam Smith and Jonathan Edwards, Friedman argues for decisive steps to limit budget deficits and for investment in programs that support broad-based growth. He warns that "any nation, even one with incomes as high as America's, will find the basic character of its society at risk if it allows its citizens' living standards to stagnate."

Friedman, in his 2005 work, The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth, discusses the profound impact of commercial and industrial developments on cultural, social and moral practices and behavior. Friedman notes that “…the attitudes of ordinary people toward their fellow citizens—admiration or resentment toward those who are more successful, a sense of opportunity or gnawing frustration over its absence—change markedly depending on whether incomes in general are rising…” “One of the primary tests of the mood of a society at any given time" he says."is whether its comfortable people tend to identify, psychologically, with the power and achievements of the very successful or with the needs and sufferings of the underprivileged."

In the years following World War II, Friedman saw inequality widening for four consecutive decades and, “Especially at the very top of the scale—not just the top 1 percent, but even more so the top 0.01 percent— the increases in income and wealth have been enormous.” The disparities continue even now and often widen. We see examples of generosity on the part of some among the very top one percent generously sharing their wealth, models of change that would make dramatic differences among those who presently have little. It would not be too much to say that the real measure of success in a democratic society is not just how well it succeeds in generating capital sufficient for the welfare of its people, but whether it also builds institutions, shared capabilities and the common will and determination to share the wealth. The more common and widespread inclination among those at the top, in positions of power and wealth, is the clear determination to follow the pattern of their predecessors in earlier generations to strengthen and extend their hold."

This is a book that should be required reading for members of Congress and Supreme Court Justices.

Perspective for social change

This book has opened my eyes to one explanation as to why things have happened as they have in our past and present as a nation. I realize there is no one explanation for such a complex subject, but this book points out a logical reason why we have so often taken two steps forward and one step back, and vice versa. I am a boomer--an early one--and I grew up through the best times after the war and experienced the 70's as a young adult. I did not realize that our economic experiences individually and as a nation had such an impact on our social progress or lack thereof. That is the premise of the book--that whether we are progressing economically--or not--colors our outlook towards others. In good times we want to share the prosperity, democracy and mobility, but in not so good times we have a tendency to backslide. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking answers as to why our history--good and bad--has been what it was.

The Chicken or the Egg?

Since the rise fascism and Bolshevism in the 1920s there has been the question of how political rights and civil liberties correspond to economic rights and growth. Amartya Sen has argued that the political rights and civil liberties should not be divorced from economic process (Development As Freedom). Sen's normative approach of equating economic rights to the freedoms one achieves with guaranteed civil liberties is one that many can respect.

Benjamin Freidman has taken a more positivist to the same issue. In doing so he asks, "Which came first the chicken or the egg?" Does economic growth in a capitalist setting require democracy and civil liberties or visa versa? Friedman's study looks back not only over all to this question in modern economic history. But, he also takes specific case studies from the United States, Germany, France and others to see the over all trends of the problem.

From this he develops a matrix on the issue. In times of growth political rights tend to expand. In times of stagnation they tend to contract. What is interesting his not how Friedman arrives at this basic framework, but his look into the exceptions of this common sense rule. Why in the 1930s was the political openness of the New Deal accepted, but the recent economic stagnation in France caused the rise of the right-wing Le Pen party?

Friedman is one of the foremost experts on the political economy. He has held a seat at Harvard since 1972. Yet, in this work for public consumption his writing is more along the lines of an historian. He does not delve too far into the economics or the political science of the issue, which many academics tend to - even for the lay reader. Instead, he sees to it that the main ideas are gotten across.

His prescriptions are simple. Maintain economic growth and we can maintain political and civil liberties. While Amartya Sen may find a problem with placing the chicken before the egg, after this work one must understand that economic stagnation helps noone.

About the Author
Randy Connolly teaches Computer Science students at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada. He has been with the Computer Science and Information Systems department since 1997. He takes great pride in teaching tomorrow' s talented young developers. He specializes in teaching Web application development, games development, and object-oriented design. His extensive experience and expertise in ASP.NET comes from a combination of teaching and work in the professional sector. Connolly spent more than eight years developing Web sites for international clients and more than sixteen years doing corporate software development. He has been the recipient of the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council Doctoral fellowship grant and the Petro-Canada Innovation in Research and Teaching Award (1998 and 2003).

Wide-ranging, easy-to-follow, practical

I was one of the tech reviewers for this book and I work as an instructional assistant with both authors at Mount Royal University, supporting the kinds of students this book was written for.

This book covers a *lot* of ground – too bad you can’t see a chapter listing for this text on Amazon. :(
I won't list out all 21 chapters, but will say topics like html/css, php, javascript, xml, security, cms, web services, web server admin, seo, and social network integration get a chapter (or more).

I found this book visually easy to follow, which is great if you’re a visual learner (like I am). There are lots (and lots!) of diagrams, the majority being very helpful in explaining concepts (instead of being just eye-candy-content-padding-filler). The layout is appealing, with enough white space and color highlighting to avoid the oh-look-a-wall-of-text effect.

As the book description blurb says here on Amazon, it "is appropriate for students who have taken a CS1 course sequence", so if you're totally new to programming, things are going to get confusing once the later chapters start tossing php and javascript code your way. (This isn't surprising, given this is meant to be a textbook for students past their first semester.)

I actually think it's a bit of a shame this is being plugged only as a textbook, as I honestly believe that anyone with some developing experience who is interested in getting into webdev would be well-served by this book - I personally learned many things reviewing the book. (The css sections on the box model and the cascade - two topics which I've seen many students struggle with over 10 years of helping them here at MRU - are particularly well done.)

Each chapter ends with the usual textbook content (a.k.a. exam fodder): terms and review questions. All chapters - except the first one on how the web works - also have projects of varying difficulty to practice the concepts covered in the chapter. I really liked these projects, as I found them very hands-on and sufficiently meaty, particularly ones past the first few introductory chapters. I can see students hitting a real-world problem after graduating, or during summer employment, and going back to these projects later for reference.

Excellent! A wealth of content covering technologies and skills needed for modern web development

As an instructor teaching web development at the university level, I am always on the lookout for textbooks that adequately cover modern web technologies. This one does and does it well. With all the new technologies that have appeared on the web scene in the last 3 years, academic publishers have had a difficult time keeping up with the fast pace of change. Fundamentals of Web Development is one of the few books that come with a full set of instructor resources, and that actually cover the material students need as a foundational knowledge base for today's web.

Be aware that this is not your grandfather's HTML! This book is comprehensive and covers some very advanced web development practices, from client-side HTML5/CSS & Javascript to advanced CSS layouts, frameworks and responsive design, to non-trivial server-side development using the LAMP/MAMP/WAMP stack, and more. Security, jQuery, AJAX, XML, JSON and RESTful Web Services, CMS and Wordpress, DNS and Webserver Administration, Search Engines and Social are all there. There is enough material and depth here to use this book as a single textbook for two or three core courses in a web concentration curriculum, which would be a huge savings for students. Chapters 1 through 7 cover client-side development and are ideal for an introductory course for technical students in IT, IS or CS.

Visually the book, PowerPoint slides and end of chapter projects are exceptional, especially the Art Store project that incorporates the HTML boilerplate framework for responsive design and comes with a full set of graphics and images. This is not simple stuff though and could be too complex for non-technical students, although the authors have done an excellent job making the material accessible with clear, plain English explanations of technical concepts and full color diagrams illustrating the more complex concepts.

I've reviewed dozens of textbooks for use in my IT classes, but when I received a desk copy from the publisher, I was stunned at the wealth of content included in this book. Fundamentals of Web Development is exactly what I've been looking for. It's a keeper - I've adopted this one.

Great book, not-so-great companion materials.

I was thrilled to find this textbook for my college class. It is hard to find a text with HTML-5, CSS, PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript. The book is well done, but I could not give it five stars because of the support material. While I normally teach this class without a text and provide all learning materials, I was hoping the companion materials would be top notch. There are FAR too many mistakes in the labs on the companion site. It causes confusion and extra work for me. I wish it had a nice test bank, but it doesn't. These are things that I look for in a text that costs my students $$$$$.

Otherwise, the book itself is the best I've used. I'll be able to cover the rest of the book in the next course, but I'll avoid the companion materials.

Not too keen on this

I don't know if it was the class or the text that made me dislike this subject. This subject seems to be in place because people are forgetting how to be professional and writing memos with "instant messenger" style grammar. Maybe this text book will help the new generation become more professional, or maybe it was a complete waste of my money.

Valuable for Grad and Undergrad in all majors

This is a "Must Have" text. If your course requires this text, don't rent it. Definitely buy it. The resources alone are worth the price.

Valuable content for the business student, educator, or communication major. Real tips such as writing a letter, responding to negative situations such as downsizing, press releases, web communication, social media, and so much more. There are many business examples from the world' stop companies to enhance learning. Great text for the undergraduate as well as the graduate student.

Excellent Condition, Came in a Timely Manner

I ordered two copies of this book on a Monday and by Thursday the box containing them was on my doorstep. I skimmed through the pages, and did not see any writing or highlighting despite the "used" condition. The only evidence that the books may have been used before is some very light marks on the cover and a slight bending of the bottom right corner. The price was certainly right as well -- in my school's bookstore, the books were over $160 apiece, and the used copies here were just about $20 each. Great price, great condition, and great shipping time. I definitely would recommend getting the book on Amazon.
