Excellent graphite portraiture book

This is a great book for artists interested in graphite as an art form---an art form all too easily over-looked. The book is filled with dazzling, highly-skilled, and dynamic drawings, as well as the in progress steps to those drawings, and the artist David Vanderpool's thoughts as he works on the drawings. The only 'draw-back' to this book is the gross amount of typos, mis-spellings, and grammatical errors. It sort of inhibited the easy flow of reading, but other than that, this book is invaluable to any graphite pencil artist's library. Vanderpool is to be commended for putting out a book that exhibits such high-quality pencil work!

Pencil art at its best!

As a pencil artist myself I was naturally curious about the book so I purchased it. I have to admit I feel a little jealousy on Davids pencil abilities. Reading the book I discovered new ways of using pencil and definitely found some new tools that have helped me improve my pencil creations. Thanks you David!

Of course, Dobyns and Queen were actual undercover agents. Falco was a regular guy with no training or experience, which makes the story that much more harrowing. Unfortunately, Falco wasn't a biker and had no experience with biker gangs. Like Jay Dobyns' No Angel (2009) and William Queen's Under and Alone (2005), this is a tense, violent, frequently distasteful story of a man living in a world of extreme violence, afraid his cover could be blown at any second. Of course, Dobyns and Queen were actual undercover agents. Falco was a regular guy with no training or experience, which makes the story that much more harrowing. In describing his nearly five years living with three separate biker gangs, Falco, ably assisted by true-crime author Droban, whose Running with the Devil (2007) followed a government infiltration of the Hells Angels, makes the reader feel at least some of the fear, disgust, and sheer panic he endured. CHARLES FALCO spent three years infiltrating the Vagos, becoming second-in-charge of the Victorville, California chapter, another two years infiltrating the Mongols and Outlaws and became vice president of a Virginia chapter of the Outlaws.

KERRIE DROBAN is the co-author of Prodigal Father, Pagan Son and author of Running with the Devil, winner of the USA Book News National Book Award for Best Memoir/Autobiography and two-time winner for their True Crime award. She is an attorney in Arizona.

Why all the hate? Snobby book critics.

First off, I read about 4 books per year. Not a lot, but more than the average adult.

Saw this book on the news while watching "The Following". I live in Socal, in the Inland Empire, and I encounter Vagos on a weekly/monthly basis. I think this book was extremely accurate, and entertaining. This is an extremely easy read. Which I believe, Falco was going for, I don't believe he was trying to make a Catcher in the Rye about motorcycle gangs.

So take the hateful reviewers with a grain of salt. For all people who are fascinated by motorcycle gang life, this is a great book. It gives you a really good idea of what undercover work is like as well, extremely stressful!

Many moments while reading this book I found myself laughing out loud or cringing. If you are an avid reader, reading a book a month, don't buy this book. This is a very basic outline of a Rico Case against a motorcycle gang, it's not meant to change your life or bring you into another dimension of serenity. It's a book about gang violence and undercover work.

Let me tell you as an Inland Empire resident who moved from Orange County CA - This level of violence really happens, and it happens right out in the open most of the time. The fact that this gang tried to blow up a police station by re-routing the gas lines into their office shows you how ruthless and crazy these people are. And for that reason - I feel this book was worth the money, and was very entertaining.

I know the reality of this book

So.. This book has its truisms and its falsehoods.. Also a lot of the demeaning behavior depicted in this book are embellished for one but also do not represent even the majority if the club. The majority are regular non tweak era.. Working men with wives or girlfriends... I am the club member portrayed in the book by the name if Bandit... It's funny reading the elaborate eccentric over the top pieces that Charles depicted.. Sorry to say but I knew him truthfully. Although he was likely stressed with the situation of the case he truthfully enjoyed a lot. Like the womanizing is not something he didn't partial in. Or the meth etc... In the book he begs for live and acceptance from the reader by making himself out an angel. But he left out plenty about himself. If she had any sense if duty for community or law enforcement it was only due to his situation. He paints himself in a golden light so as to not have to see his earned federal prison time and to make money. He continued further investigations and ratting because I know for fact he truly loved the outlaw biker lifestyle and wanted and enjoyed living it. I read this and laugh at many parts but the truth is every org has good brothers and bad apples. I am a good person, a family man, and I work 70 hrs a week. I don't sell drugs or beat my fiancé. I am a great father to my 2 year ild daughter and am living my life right. But to be honest while active in the club you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who could say that I ever fought web I didn't have to. There were many who knew me as standup dude who lived by the club motto. "I gave what I got". As in I gave respect when given to me. And dealt disrespect ten fold when given to me. But I never looked for it and was often very cordial to "civilians"

This book is very good, one of the best on the subject, but the Kindle download version of this is missing the excellent photos the regular book store version has, and it stinks. They should tell you it doesn't include the photos. Don't bother with the Kindle download of this, get the regular book version of it instead or you'll be missing out on the good photos that go with it.

A "Band of Brothers" of the air war.

If you liked "Band of Brothers", you will enjoy this read. The Mighty 8th lost more men than any other combat unit during WWII and this is great history. It is a band of brothers in the air. Since my father was a B-17 pilot, this was of special interest to me.

Best book for the new prepper

This is an incredibly easy-to-follow book, complete with lists and priorities. It emphasizes doing instead of buying and uses real life examples to explain why many tasks are emphasized over others.

At 195 pages it's not difficult to read and it won't provide earth-shattering secrets to make you Rambo overnight. It focuses on the basics that most of us forget because we're too busy whacking at the trees to see the forest. I have a good library and this is the book that everyone should start with. If you are already an experienced prepper then you should still buy two copies of the book. One to make sure you've covered the basics, and the other to give to your friends who still think the government will save them during the next natural disaster.

Practical Family Insurance

Some believe the stereotype of survivalists as gloomy and pessimistic. But who could be more optimistic than someone who believes he can help his family survive the worst of life's possible catastrophes? The author of this book is a God fearing, law abiding and hard working Everyman who sees the dangers and uncertainties in our modern life and has written a book for others like him to help them prepare for whatever is in our future, good or bad. Those who read the title and expect raving paranoia will be disappointed. Mr Fox is a retired Special Forces officer, Boy Scout leader, and community volunteer who has seen bad times come to people around the world, some prepared and some not, and has learned from their example. Those who expect most of the book to be weapon oriented will again be let down. Guns are mentioned briefly, but the book is mostly geared to more mundane but highly practical subjects such as lostproofing your children, valuing skills over "Buying Stuff", food storage, hygiene, tools, evacuation kits, and most important, building a healthy family unit that supports and encourages each other during bad times and good. The information in this book can help every family deal with problems in the news everyday, including floods, hurricanes, extended power outages, blizzards, terrorist attacks, economic disaster and many more. Considering how expensive being unprepared for life's more serious problems can be, this book is a bargain.

Real Java for the real world - an all around good book.

I've read many books on Java, and they're all the same cr*p. For a small work, this book certainly packs some punch. It touches upon many interesting topics, such as MVC frameworks, Java for networking, and even Java3D! It is worded in a way which enables the reader to easily map what they read into a conceptual thought.

Incredibly Information-Dense but Clear

I picked this book up as an impulse buy the last time I went book browsing in the physical world. It was one of the better purchases I made that day; I've been so impressed that I came here to search for more books by the same author.
The content level of Key Java is head and shoulders above most java books. Those few books with comparable content usually fail in some other dimension (clarity, accessibility, brevity, completeness, non-trivial examples). The writing style is a bit dry and academic, but the author is obviously no stranger to serious programming.
Many java books are filled with either relentlessly detailed - but not informative - examination of the topic, or with smoothly written but empty prose. Key Java's chapters are excellently written for "I need it NOW" reading, and each one clearly explains the topic, both in concept and in practice. I won't say you'll be able to read through a chapter and become a master of the topic; some of these topics are seriously complex and take some measure of mulling over and contemplation. But invariably, in the past, when I've tackled a new concept in Java, I've had to read the same topic in five or more different books to get the complete picture. This is not the case with _Key Java_.
This book easily makes it into my top five favorite java books, and is contending with a few others (Bruce Eckel's _Thinking In Java_, etc) for the #1 position. However, Key Java's approach and nuts 'n bolts discussions of advanced-but-not-theoretical java topics make it much more of a complementary book than a competitor, a fine addition to any java bookshelf.
One thing I'm particularly happy about is the form factor of the book - too many java books are tomes that risk breaking your wrist (or your foot if you drop it). There's a prevailing mindset in technical book publishing that the thicker the book, the better (the thicker the spine, the more bookstore shelf real estate you get for your book to advertise itself). Key Java is concise and focused, and the form factor reflects that; I carried it around in my large coat pocket to read as the mood struck me for a couple of weeks.

Just Buy It

This is one of the very, very few Java books on the market that will give you any new insight into using the language. In a very small space, it provides an amazing amount of detail - at both the low implementation level and the high architectural level. The chapters on memory and speed optimization alone make it worth the price. This book manages to say a lot with very few words. It runs completely against the grain of all the wordy, useless, and incorrect Java books out there, and every serious Java programmer should own it.

Here, Katherine Tate examines the significance of race in the U.S. system of representative democracy for African Americans. Presenting important new findings, she offers the first empirical study to take up the question of representation from both sides of the constituent-representative relationship.

The first half of the book examines whether black members of the U.S. House legislate and represent their constituents differently than white members do. Representation is broadly conceptualized to include not only legislators' roll call voting behavior and bill sponsorship, but also the symbolic acts in which they engage. The second half looks at the issue of representation from the perspective of ordinary African Americans based on a landmark national survey.

Tate's findings are mixed. But, in the main, legislators' race does shape how they represent their constituents and how constituents evaluate them. African Americans view black representatives more positively than they do white representatives, even those who belong to their own political party. Black legislators, however, are just as likely as white representatives to sponsor and gain passage of bills in the House. Tate also concludes that black House members are more liberal as a group than are their black constituents, but that there is considerable divergence in the quality and type of representation they provide.

The findings reported here will generate controversy in the fields of politics, law, and race, particularly as debate commences over renewing the Voting Rights Act, which is set to expire in 2007.

an excellent article stretched into a not-so-excellent book

This book kind of meanders around from topic to topic, rather than being focused on a specific thesis. Tate wanders around from theoretical justifications for electing more Black legislators to objective descriptions of what minority legislators do to poll data. I didn't feel like Tate really tied one part of the book to another very effectively, nor did I feel like her use of theory and history said anything all that interesting.

Having said that, I do think her use of poll data is worth reading. She discusses a survey of Black voters, and compares Black voters living in districts represented by a Black congressperson to those represented by Republicans and White Democrats. Much to my surprise, she finds some significant differences: Black voters in Black-represented districts are somewhat more likely to have heard of their federal legislator, and much more supportive of him or her, than Black voters living in White-dominated congressional districts. They are also slightly more interested in politics generally, though the differences may not be statistically significant. This data certainly makes a persuasive (though by no means irrefutable) case for race-conscious districting.

On balance, this book reads like a really good scholarly article (on the poll data) that was stretched into a so-so book.

In the American political system it is critical that all groups are represented and that within each district constituents feel that their voices are heard. Katherine Tate addresses the issues that face African Americans in their fight for representation. Tate contributes greatly to the traditional American politics question, what is representation, while adding to the debate over the worth of majority-minority districts. Black Faces in the Mirror is a meaningful addition to preexisting literature on African American congressional representation yet, it is distinguished from other studies, because not only does Tate address the debate over race and representation but she does so through an empirical analysis.

I am a currently a college student and I have read this book several times. Black Faces in The Mirror is definitely a must read for those that would like to know more about minority representation, the majority-minority redistricting debate, the role of representatives in the U.S. Congress, the history of African-Americans in Congress, and much more!

Peter Navarro, business professor at University of California–Irvine, is author of the best-selling The Coming China Wars. I found the book to be terribly one-sided and the authors unwilling to delve deeper into the circumstances behind certain situations. Not that they are wrong - as far as I know from living in China seven years all of the incidents they list actually took place. But the list is alarming (which is their point in a global call for action) and is essentially a compilation of all the bad news coming out of China recently. In a book format it merely serves to repel the reader - I had trouble finishing the book. Imagine if you had to listen to Fox News report on China for 24 hours straight. Perhaps if it had been written in a more scholarly fashion and attempted to explain why bad things happen in China it would have been a more pleasant read. Nonetheless, if you prefer the Michael Moore style it can be a quick and useful read.
