I don’t know about your house (or more specifically your reading habits) but in my house I have two very distinct reading seasons.

Cold weather = serious books.
Hot weather = easy reads.

It’s not that I’m opposed to switching it up a bit (I have been known to dive into some fairly serious books during the spring/summer months) but not all that often.

Why?

Because when the weather heats up, my life morphs into a weird alternate reality. My kids break from school. We spend an exorbitant amount of time around the pool (or on the road) and my level of concentration decreases. Reading something like…say…high fantasy while trying to keep an eye on my kids (so they don’t drown) is difficult. I’ll lose my place, or have to reread a passage multiple times to remember what was happening. (Boo.)

That’s exactly why books like Jen Meyers’ “Happily Ever After” are so important to me. Though they are predictable, and often repetitive (which is the case in HEA) they are also cute, easy to read, and always end on an up-note. (No one wants to read about death and dismemberment while chilling on a beach in Maui. That is what one would call: a major bummer.) But, I digress…

Like I said above, this book is a tad predictable, but…that’s ok. When I pick up something like HEA, I’m not looking for a life altering plot. I want an entertaining one. That is exactly what Meyers’ story delivered. Easy breezy entertainment.

Everly (who’s name is actually shortened to Ever in the story; I’ll give you a second to process the semblance behind that.) has done the unthinkable. She horizontal mambo’d the world’s most notorious man-whore. Said man-whore (who’s name is actually Austin) just so happens to be the brother of her best-friend. Now, insert a bunch of obvious plot points here…and you get the drift. Things are about to get incredibly awkward for Everly.

It’s not the plot though that had me flipping pages, it was the characters. They are what actually make this book work. Everly and Austin are surrounded by a bunch of coo-coo birds. (Said with love of course.) There’s the business woman, the hippie, the promiscuous one. There’s the intolerable mother-in-law, She-Devil boss lady, and the King of Douchbagery Land himself…the groom. They each play a part in the eventual climax of the story, and they do so in very fascinating ways. (ie: naked yoga, or…becoming members of the mile-high club.) Without them the story would feel flat. Everly alone is a very boring character, she is 100% focused on work and denial. The same could be said for Austin. His focus lies heavily on trying to prove to Everly what type of man he is, not moving the story along. Which means it’s up to the supporting cast to drive the pace.

Now, I could keep going…point out exactly what didn’t work and what did, but I think I’ve said enough to get my point across (without spoiling the whole book.)

“Happily Ever After” is a beach read. It’s what you download on your kindle or throw in your bag when you are racing out of the house. It’s not overly serious (though, admittedly..there were a few touching moments) and can be read in a few hours. The plot is not going to surprise you (even the twist at the end isn’t too hard to guess) but that doesn’t detract from it’s fun laid back intent.

If you want an easy read, or even a happy one, this is the book for you. Think of it as a Harlequin without a swoony dude on the front cover.

Best author you can count On! I promise! Please read!

OMG! This was one of the best follow-up novels that I have ever read. First I read the prequel, Happily Ever Now and I was immediately pulled into this book that I couldn't wait to read Happily Ever After. I read the book in about two hours and it was AWESOME! The characters became even more complex as the book went along. I can't tell you enough how much I enjoyed these two books. I was disappointed that Happily Ever Now ended so quickly but it did exactly what it was designed to do-pull the reader in. I couldn't wait to read this and I am so happy to be one of Jen Meyers ARC Readers, I was able to obtain this two books for free for my honest review in exchange. I have to say that I ave never read a book by Jen Meyers that was bad. Jen is definitely an author that delivers every single time you read a new book. Since receiving Happily Ever Now and Happily Ever After, I have already read both books twice. I absolutely LOVED these books and I hope that you will give Jen Meyer books a chance. She will not let you down, she has been rock steady in her writing and delivers new and exciting reads as soon as she possibly can. I can't wait to read another one of Jen's books and I really hope that you give this book a chance...I promise you will enjoy it!

A good story

I enjoyed the story but the language was too raunchy for me. I would like a version without the gutter language. Jen Meyers is a gifted story teller. Probably the book is for a younger reader.

Dads and men are so often butt of jokes and made to look incompetent these days. I love seeing a book that lets kids see dad as someone to look up to - as their Superhero! But it also lets them see him as a superhero for who he really is. I love this book!

Is your dad your Super Hero?

My Dad is a Super Hero is an entertaining young reader’s story that brings a young boys imagination to life that sees his father as a super hero. The narrative is light-hearted and fun and shows a father’s every day task and work in a super heroic way.

The hero in My Dad is a Super Hero is an ordinary father taking care of his young son like any father would but this dad has super powers. The author, Lily Lexington, uses simple words and illustrations that clearly show this dad has special powers indeed.

The son explains how his father has x-ray vision and can find him wherever he is hiding even under the bed or in the closet. His dad called during dinner one night and could tell he had not eaten his vegetables. That meant his dad could read his mind.

As the story continues he tells how his dad is faster than a speeding bullet because he got to him so fast when he wrecked his bike and his dad has other qualities like being stronger than a lion, having sonic hearing and knowing all the right answers to everything.

I would highly recommend this book for all young readers who enjoy light-hearted fun books with colorful illustrations or those who have a dad with Superman-like qualities.

Six impossible things before breakfast

It's probably not fair to review a book about genetics and religious mega-conspiracy so long after its original publication date -- too much water under the bridge with this genre. Even if the reader makes a firm commitment to avoid comparing it to "The Da Vinci Code," what about Lewis Perdue's "The Daughter of God" or James Rollins' "Map of Bones"? The list is huge.

This book was first published in 1997 as "The Miracle Strain," before many of the better-known religious conspiracy books.

Michael Cordy may have offered us an embarrassment of riches in combining the two main plot elements, religion and genetics. Neither element feels completely original, and there's a slight awkwardness in the way they fit together. To paraphrase Lewis Carroll, it's a bit like trying to believe six impossible things before breakfast. The travel's too easy, the geneticist's genius sidekick too naive, the science a little too shallowly portrayed, the ethical decision-making too facile. Oh, and the characters could have done with much more development

All that said, the book is an absorbing thriller and still a very good read. The plot manages to throw a few surprises at the reader, and even the predictable developments are reasonably well presented. I recommend this book for traveling or any time when your attention is partially committed elsewhere: you may not lose yourself entirely in it but you'll be able to pick it up and dive right back into it.

Contradictions in the story line

I was very disappointed in the book. I'm not sure how to explain this without giving away too much of the book. So, if plan on reading the book and you want to be surprised read no further.....

The book is about the search for the "messiah" by matching his DNA. In chapter 19 they search their own database. In chapter 21 they are surprised when they find the messiah's DNA in someone else's database. The problem is the DNA was entered into their own database in chater 10. So, why didn't they find it when they searched their own database?

About the Author
Melanie Hawthorne is Professor of French at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, with special emphasis on prose fiction of the "Decadent" period and on women writers.

Liz Constable is Associate Professor in the Women and Gender Studies program at UC Davis. Her primary research areas focus on late nineteenth-century and twentieth century French and Francophone Cultural Studies and Film. She has published widely in these areas, including articles on Simone de Beauvoir and French women decadent writers.

Fascinating and Disturbing

This book was first published with a preface that warned the reader to beware such a novel, for it is the fantasy of an hysteric. If it weren't for the fact that early 20th century hysteria was debunked, this would be totally true. Monsieur Venus is a crazy trip into the mind of a woman who wishes to assume the role of a man, without biologically changing anything about herself.

The main character, Raoule de Venerande, falls in love with a young, attractive young artist named Jacques. Over the course of the novel, she progressively becomes more public with her wish to be considered a man, which ultimately culminates in one of the most shocking and disturbing endings I've ever seen - but one which in retrospect seems inevitable.

If you're interested in the role that gender plays in identity and have already done some background reading, then this is a great book to turn to.

"Monsieur" Venus, an intriguing depraved narrative

Rachilde wrote this novella when only 20. First published in 1884, it naturally caused an outrage at the time and even read in the 21st Century it is easy to see why. Raoule de Venerande is a wealthy aristocratic Parisian, both a cross dresser and domineering woman, who falls for Jacques Silvert, an androgynously beautiful young impoverished artist. The swapped gender roles of Rauole and Jacques forms the focus of the narrative. Baron Raitolbe, whose unrequited love for Raoule, is also under her bewitching powers. With the homo-erotic ending and the necrophyllic imagery, it is easy to understand this book's classification as Decadent.

Ben Uyeda is a designer, lecturer, and co-founder of HomeMade-Modern.com, FreeGreen.com, and ZeroEnergy Design. In 2010, he won the U.S. Green Building Council’s Natural Talent Design Competition by creating affordable green home designs for the New Orleans’ Broadmoor neighborhood as part of the rebuilding effort following Hurricane Katrina. He lives in Boston.

Gotta get this book!

I love this book! There are so many really neat and functional pieces in here. We made the bar stools and changed a few things on them. We needed them taller - no problem, just get longer pipes! We used all 2 x 4's, placing the foot rests flat so that they were wider. Also, we secured the seats with u-clamps because we had trouble drilling holes through the 2" side - it might be easier with a drill press, but we don't own one. They came out great and we have had so many compliments on them! Onto our next project!

Not much in the book worth making

Sadly, about the only project in this book that would yield something I would have in my house is the main one on the front, and then only with an upgrade in wood and joinery. I blame myself to some extent for not studying the description more fully. Had I done so, I might have guessed at what was inside (hence the three stars rather than one). The projects in the book are, frankly, junky. The pieces that are meant for human contact would be unbearably uncomfortable. I could see this stuff in a college student party house or in some post-apocalyptic scenario, but nowhere else. That having been said, the layout of the book is nice and the projects are probably accessible to anyone with even the slightest mechanical ability.

Nice book for inspiration, lacking on execution

Love the website, and decided to purchase the book for the "pipe barstool" plans. This is the first project I've taken on from the book. I'm disappointed to find that in this one project alone, I have found 4 errors! Not a huge deal for me, I would say I have above average experience and a well equipped garage. But, for a novice, these mistakes will results in additional costs, additional time, a ton of frustration, and a result that is below expectations.
