About the Author

Douglas L. Erwin, P.E., is a practicing process engineer for engineering design and construction companies, major refinery-operating companies, and major chemical product companies. His project assignments have ranged from daily, routine technical services in refineries through the conception of new, complex, first-of-their-type patented processes. Erwin’s chief quest in engineering practice has been to extend knowledge beyond commercial process simulation software, covering the severe technology gaps these packages miss. He has worked in the chemical engineering and process industry in Korea, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Peru, Singapore, Canada, Alaska, the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, Egypt, and the United States. Erwin is considered by clients worldwide to be an expert on code safety practice, the design and operation of oil and gas production and gas processing plants, and refinery liquid-liquid extraction design and operation.

The photographs are excellent, but the index sucks. It is poorly organized and incomplete. Take my advice and buy this book for Neuroanatomy just for the pictures. The paperback edition is very afforadable. Just put lots of little flags on the pages or sections you use most. It will save you much brain-ache.

The elegant style and pragmatic tone of Eugene Kennedy's writing are typified in the following passage: "We may thank God that we can feel pain and know sadness, for these are the human sentiments that constitute our glory as well as our grief." As a psychologist, Kennedy is concerned with the mature person and notes that maturity is marked by the acceptance of the distress that is part and parcel of our relationships with others. Escape into drugs, work, vapid entertainment, or even prayer, is not a solution. We must accept the pain as well as the pleasure of relationships, for "close and affectionate relationships with other people are the prime signal of healthy personhood."

It is interesting that there is no place for solitude in Kennedy's world. Perhaps he is right that the primary obligation for all of us is the difficult work of loving others.

Accessible and Direct

The structure of Kennedy's venture into human mechanics allows for the reader to start, finish, and continue at any point in the book. With chapters not totaling more than five or six pages each, every idea is explored with concise consideration. I often found myself looking at the chapter titles and skipping to whatever section was applicable for that point of time.
Despite the melodramatic title, "Pain of Being Human" is one of those books you keep near your nightstand for daily reflection. It takes a Christian perspective on life and introduces morals that make sense in the modern world. I am not a religious person and I still gleaned so much insight from the text without getting the feeling I was being preached to.
It is a definite good choice and should go under the category "Self-Help book with dignity."

Pain = Growth

The Pain of Being Human crystalises all those thoughts you had about existence - but never wrote down. Lucidly written without the usual psycho-babble that psychologists like to impress us with. Another book that gave me greater insight into the pain of being human, was the inspired "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. Patton's Jesus is faced with the unimagined dilemma of his own spirituality being confronted by his immense humanity. I enjoyed both these books but came away with a greater understanding after reading Patton's book. Admittedly Patton's book is written as a novel where Kennedy's book is written as a dissertation. Kennedy's book is accessible and sure to become a standard on Psychology. Recommended

About the Author
William G. Zikmund, Ph.D., was a professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University until his death in 2002. He received his bachelor of science degree in marketing from the University of Colorado, a master of science degree from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in marketing from the University of Colorado. Professor Zikmund worked in marketing research for Conway/Millikin Company and Remington Arms Company before beginning his academic career, and he had extensive consulting experience with business and not-for-profit organizations. Professor Zikmund published dozens of articles and papers in a diverse group of scholarly journals, including the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, ACCOUNTING REVIEW, and the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY. He was the author of the successful textbooks EXPLORING MARKETING RESEARCH, BUSINESS RESEARCH METHODS, MARKETING, and EFFECTIVE MARKETING, as well as a work of fiction: A CORPORATE BESTIARY. Professor Zikmund was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Marketing Association, the Academy of Marketing Science, the Association for Consumer Research, the Society for Marketing Advances, the Marketing Educators¿ Association, and the Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators. This book is really to those who want to analyse why a particular phenomenon is behaving the way it is. The book is full of detailed survey examples and it just does not stop with the questionnaire and the data analysis but readers will be able to put a particular reason in terms of a function of attributes that contribute to the reason and that is really useful.

I'll be honest here...I logged into my Amazon account to review another product and this product also showed up as something needing my review...So...since I cannot remember when I ordered this, and I cannot honestly say that I remember the content, I'll give it a good healthy 4 star rating...because I can say that I (oddly) do seem to remember when I do dislike a book, and I do not remember disliking this one. So 4 star rating it is. Good luck!

Excellent General Marketing Research Text

I am an MBA/Graduate Marketing Research adjunct professor at Lindenwood University in St. Louis, MO and I am currently using this text for my class. The students find it very accessible, even for non-researchers, and easy to read. I find that it flows very well and makes good use of real-world examples. The only criticism is that there could be even more real-world cases and examples and some interactive projects that could better allow students to have a more hands-on learning experience. This text is very good overall, but I am needing to supplement the class with some outside real-world projects.

Bravo!

An incredibly well-written book whose author manages to straddle the line of a convincing portrayal of the insidious nature of emotional abuse without every becoming depressing, Verismo deserves a Bravo!

Both Nicholas and Cedric are men damaged by irresponsible parents, parents who simply care more about their relationships with their parents than they do about raising their children in a healthy environment. Both have musical gifts that set them apart. Cedric is also different in that he became blind shortly after birth, but manages to create and sustain more and healthier relationships with others than Nicholas who is detached and unemotional. His detachment and fear of emotional involvement, a result of his mother's choices, is so great that as an adult his only sexual outlet is in touching others, never allowing them to touch him.

NIcholas and Cedric meet when both attend the University of Washington as guest lecturer and student, respectively. They have a "meet cute" beginning and later develop a personal and musical relationship after Nicholas hears Cedric playing one of his compositions. A medical setback for Cedric and his interfering and abusive parents create obstacles that are overcome for a HEA.

My only caveat with the book is in its portrayal of NIcholas and Cedric's sexuality. After the construction of Nicholas' detached and emotionally isolating "no-touch" policy, as well as the depth of the connection between the two men, as a reader I needed to see their first real physical bonding in the form of intercourse. I was saddened that we only see that sort of sexuality in a throw-away sort of moment -- a quickie before guests arrive for a party -- rather than see the physical and emotional impact, especially for Nicholas. It left me feeling as though a curtain had been drawn and I was being excluded from a complete picture.

That said, this book is truly excellent.

Such a beautiful story. Engrossing, dramatic and woven through with the soul deep music of the great composers past and present. Every note of this story adds to it's beauty; from living life with pain to finding your soulmate through the love of music born from your deepest heart.
A truly beautiful accomplishment of the author's talent.

You will be swept away in the beauty of this story!

I cannot even begin to describe how amazing Verismo by E.M. Lindsey was. I lost an entire Sunday because I just could not stop reading this book. This is a long story as well as an engaging one so I recommend you set aside some free time to get all the way through without having to get distracted by silly things like making dinner and sleeping!

In Verismo by E.M. Lindsey, you will follow Nicolas and Cedric all the way from childhood into early adulthood when they finally meet. This is not usually my cup of tea when it comes to romances but each character is so incredibly unique that their history just drags you in and makes you want to keep reading. And because their past has so much to do with their present character, you really do need to get to know them thoroughly. They won’t actually meet until about 35% of the way into the story and I admit I was getting a tad bit antsy for that to happen by that point. Once they do finally meet, the REAL story is just beginning!

There are too many details in this story to sum up in one short review. Suffice it to say that both Nicolas and Cedric have seriously difficult pasts to overcome that make them afraid to go after what they truly love. For Cedric, his love of music has been stomped on and he has stuffed it deep inside and ignores it. For Nicolas, his heart has a wall around it a mile thick and he refuses to give it to anyone. When they come together, the walls start crumbling away. Cedric’s love of music awakens and Nicolas starts feeling a warmth in his heart that he can no longer deny. Working together, they are furiously trying to perfect not only the music but their feelings for each other as well. The development of both the music AND their love just grabbed me and tugged at my heart and soul.

The development of the secondary characters was phenomenal. There were only a handful of really important characters and they were all well developed with their own little quirks and stories. I absolutely loved Remy and am so glad that he and Cedric found each other again after so long.

The heat level is low for most of this book but you will not care one bit. Cedric and Nicolas are complex characters and towards the end, they are obviously in love but still dancing around each other. They do finally figure out the passionate side of their relationship and the buildup was well worth the wait.

I cannot recommend this story highly enough. Whether you know a single thing about music or not, you will get swept up in the creation of Nicolas’s Magnum Opus and you will cheer for Cedric’s rediscovery of the music inside him. And when these two characters finally come together you will sigh with happiness that they finally found their perfect match!

About the Author
Leonard B. Scott (Col. USA ret.) is also the author of the acclaimed novels Charlie Mike, The Last Run, The Hill, The Expendables, The Iron Men, and Forged in Honor. Scott retired in 1994 as a full colonel after a twenty-seven-year career in the United States Army, with assignments throughout the world. A veteran of Vietnam, he earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Colonel Scott devotes all his time to researching and writing his novels. He and his wife have returned to their home state of Oklahoma, bought their dream house, and declare they're never moving again.
