How to See: Looking, Talking, and Thinking about Art, by David Salle

A master class in contemporary art by one of the preeminent painters of our time.

How does art work? How does it move us, inform us, challenge us? Internationally renowned painter David Salle’s incisive essay collection illuminates the work of many of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Engaging with a wide range of Salle’s friends and contemporaries―from painters to conceptual artists such as Jeff Koons, John Baldessari, Roy Lichtenstein, and Alex Katz, among others―How to See explores not only the multilayered personalities of the artists themselves but also the distinctive character of their oeuvres.

Salle writes with humor and verve, replacing the jargon of art theory with precise and evocative descriptions that help the reader develop a personal and intuitive engagement with art. The result: a master class on how to see with an artist’s eye.

Review
“If John Berger’s Ways of Seeing is a classic of art criticism, looking at the ‘what’ of art, then David Salle’s How to See is the artist’s reply, a brilliant series of reflections on how artists think when they make their work. The ‘how’ of art has perhaps never been better explored.” (Salman Rushdie)

“David Salle’s brilliant canvases changed everything, and now his luminescent eye and voice have married in a book that is destined to alter not only how we look at art, but the language we use to describe it. His essays are a gift that, in addition to feeding one’s process of intellection, nourishes one’s art loving soul. Transcendent.” (Hilton Als)

“David Salle is widely known as one of our most daring and intelligent painters, but he is also an eloquent critic. How to See is a marvel of incisive and intimate observation. For all his audacity as a painter, Salle seems touchingly proud to be a part of the family of art and to derive his pictorial forms from what he calls the ‘the shared DNA of art,’ raising the possibility that all masterworks are in fact a group project.” (Deborah Solomon)

“David Salle’s thoughtful, intelligent, beautifully written essays inspire us to think about, and look at, art in wholly new ways. He makes difficult subjects (and artists) seem effortless, transparent, and he wears the depth and breadth of his knowledge of art and art history so lightly that we hardly notice how much we are learning. How to See is a pure pleasure to read.” (Francine Prose)

“David Salle writes about art with a joyous lucidity that is both bracing―nothing, absolutely nothing, escapes his notice―and utterly disarming. He guides his readers through the complex world of contemporary art with a rare generosity of spirit, a dazzling skill at description, and a radiant honesty that are as challenging as they are irresistible.” (Ingrid Rowland)

“David Salle asks of other art not, where does this belong? but, what does this make me feel and think about? Salle subtly and persuasively reminds us that all art, even the most seemingly recalcitrant, is there to be looked at, and that what artists do is, exactly, teach us how to see.” (Adam Gopnik)

“David Salle has a sharp, thrilling eye and an uncanny ability to reorder and make new the act of seeing. These perceptive, far-ranging essays are drawn from deep knowledge and experience―reading this book feels like having a conversation about art with the smartest person in the room.” (Emma Cline)

“Lovely to read… [How to See] is serious but never solemn, alert to pleasure, a boulevardier’s crisp stroll through the visual world.” (Dwight Garner - New York Times)

“A trenchant and light-on-its-feet collection of critical essays... about art, artists, fame, and, if you read it closely enough, what it’s like to have been David Salle for all these years.”” (Carl Swanson - New York Magazine)

“A remarkable painter whose writing is as fresh, vital, and startling as his canvases, Salle… talks about artists and their work in witty, jargon-free, and eminently accessible prose.” (Tirdad Derakhshani - Philadelphia Inquirer)

“How to See is an exhilarating and cathartic experience… an offering of passion and generosity, and a pulsing invitation to the reader to find the same in the act of seeing.” (Simone Grace Seol - The National Book Review)

“[A] breath of fresh air… Salle is the perfect art tour guide: literate, thoroughly entertaining, and insightful.” (Kirkus)

“Sharp insights and an affable tone make this collection equivalent to a hearty discussion with a mentor―recommended for anyone interested in visual arts.” (Publishers Weekly)

Enjoyable, readable, insightful, expansive.
By Thomas Forhan
Maybe it takes an artist to write about artists, but this collection of essays and descriptions of artists' work, life and personalities is wonderful. Almost every essay sent me off to the rabbit hole looking for more examples of the art discussed, and so I found the book very expansive. Have a laptop at hand as you read and explore and enjoy at will.

Fast Solvers for Mesh-Based Computations (Advances in Applied Mathematics), by Maciej Paszynski

Fast Solvers for Mesh-Based Computations presents an alternative way of constructing multi-frontal direct solver algorithms for mesh-based computations. It also describes how to design and implement those algorithms.

The book’s structure follows those of the matrices, starting from tri-diagonal matrices resulting from one-dimensional mesh-based methods, through multi-diagonal or block-diagonal matrices, and ending with general sparse matrices.

Each chapter explains how to design and implement a parallel sparse direct solver specific for a particular structure of the matrix. All the solvers presented are either designed from scratch or based on previously designed and implemented solvers.

Each chapter also derives the complete JAVA or Fortran code of the parallel sparse direct solver. The exemplary JAVA codes can be used as reference for designing parallel direct solvers in more efficient languages for specific architectures of parallel machines.

The author also derives exemplary element frontal matrices for different one-, two-, or three-dimensional mesh-based computations. These matrices can be used as references for testing the developed parallel direct solvers.

Based on more than 10 years of the author’s experience in the area, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students who would like to learn how to design and implement parallel direct solvers for mesh-based computations.

Great, comprehensive book on new generation multi-frontal solvers
By Piotr
I wish this book was on the market while I was trying to familiarize myself with a subject of fast, direct solvers for problems like Finite Element Method. Certainly, there are multiple papers available, but purchasing them one by one just to find out that something was missing anyway was disappointing. This is why I've given a warm welcome to this book that is comprehensive in its nature and covers practically everything that should be said in this subject. There is a multitude of examples and clear illustrations. Efficiency comparison with the traditional solvers make it also clear that this is where the future is.

Very, very disappointing copy!
By Amazon Customer
So very disappointing! Hundertwasser's original was a treasure! I would call this a cheap knock-off with its black glossy pages - so sad - and no wonder the price was relatively cheap ... it has nothing of the velvety matt feel of the original black pages and the metallic colours are not as vibrant as the original. I don't remember any white pages in the back half af the original book that this version has. I think Hundertwasser would turn in his grave - So sad ...... this little book provides nothing of the mystique of Hundertwasser's original little publication!

Video From "The Chemist's War" (Slate Magazine), by Deborah BlumPulitzer Prize-winning science writer Deborah Blum follows New York City's first forensic scientists to discover a fascinating Jazz Age story of chemistry and detection, poison and murder.

Deborah Blum, writing with the high style and skill for suspense that is characteristic of the very best mystery fiction, shares the untold story of how poison rocked Jazz Age New York City. In The Poisoner's Handbook Blum draws from highly original research to track the fascinating, perilous days when a pair of forensic scientists began their trailblazing chemical detective work, fighting to end an era when untraceable poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime.

Drama unfolds case by case as the heroes of The Poisoner's Handbook—chief medical examiner Charles Norris and toxicologist Alexander Gettler—investigate a family mysteriously stricken bald, Barnum and Bailey's Famous Blue Man, factory workers with crumbling bones, a diner serving poisoned pies, and many others. Each case presents a deadly new puzzle and Norris and Gettler work with a creativity that rivals that of the most imaginative murderer, creating revolutionary experiments to tease out even the wiliest compounds from human tissue. Yet in the tricky game of toxins, even science can't always be trusted, as proven when one of Gettler's experiments erroneously sets free a suburban housewife later nicknamed "America's Lucretia Borgia" to continue her nefarious work.

From the vantage of Norris and Gettler's laboratory in the infamous Bellevue Hospital it becomes clear that killers aren't the only toxic threat to New Yorkers. Modern life has created a kind of poison playground, and danger lurks around every corner. Automobiles choke the city streets with carbon monoxide; potent compounds, such as morphine, can be found on store shelves in products ranging from pesticides to cosmetics. Prohibition incites a chemist's war between bootleggers and government chemists while in Gotham's crowded speakeasies each round of cocktails becomes a game of Russian roulette. Norris and Gettler triumph over seemingly unbeatable odds to become the pioneers of forensic chemistry and the gatekeepers of justice during a remarkably deadly time. A beguiling concoction that is equal parts true crime, twentieth-century history, and science thriller, The Poisoner's Handbook is a page-turning account of a forgotten New York.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: Author Deborah Blum's Top Ten Poisons

On a recent radio show, I heard myself telling the host "And carbon monoxide is such a good poison.” We both started laughing--there’s just something about a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist waxing enthusiastic about something so lethal. But then he became curious--“Why?” he asked. “Why do you like it so much?”

These days, as I travel the country talking about The Poisoner’s Handbook, I’m frequently asked that question or variations on it. What’s your favorite poison? What’s the perfect poison? The answer to the latter is that it doesn’t exist--except in the plots of crime novels.

But in reality, poisons really are fascinatingly wicked chemical compounds and many of them have fascinating histories as well. Just between us, then, here’s a list of my personal favorites.

1. Carbon Monoxide (really)--It’s so beautifully simple (just two atoms--one of carbon, one of oxygen) and so amazingly efficient a killer. There’s a story I tell in the book about a murder syndicate trying to kill an amazingly resilient victim. They try everything from serving him poison alcohol to running over him with a car. But in the end, it’s carbon monoxide that does him in.

2. Arsenic--This used to be the murderer’s poison of poisons, so commonly used in the early 19th century that it was nicknamed “the inheritance powder”. It’s also the first poison that forensic scientists really figured out how to detect in a corpse. And it stays in the body for centuries, which is why we keep digging up historic figures like Napoleon or U.S. President Zachary Taylor to check their remains for poison.

3. Radium--I love the fact that this rare radioactive element used to be considered good for your health. It was mixed into medicines, face creams, health drinks in the 1920s. People thought of it like a tiny glowing sun that would give them its power. Boy, were they wrong. The two scientists in my book, Charles Norris and Alexander Gettler, proved in 1928 that the bones of people exposed to radium became radioactive--and stayed that way for years.

4. Nicotine--This was the first plant poison that scientists learned to detect in a human body. Just an incredible case in which a French aristocrat and her husband decided to kill her brother for money. They actually stewed up tobacco leaves in a barn to brew a nicotine potion. And their amateur chemical experiments inspired a very determined professional chemist to hunt them down.

5. Chloroform--Developed for surgical anesthesia in the 19th century, this rapidly became a favorite tool of home invasion robbers. If you read newspapers around the turn of the 20th century, they’re full of accounts of people who answered a knock on the door, only to be knocked out by a chloroform soaked rag. One woman woke up to find her hair shaved off--undoubtedly sold for the lucrative wig trade.

6. Mercury--In its pure state, mercury appears as a bright silver liquid, which scatters into shiny droplets when touched. No wonder it’s nicknamed quicksilver. People used to drink it as a medicine more than 100 years ago. No, they didn’t drop dead. Those silvery balls just slid right through them. Mercury is much more poisonous if it’s mixed with other chemicals and can be absorbed by the body directly. That’s why methylmercury in fish turns out to be so risky a contaminant.

7. Cyanide--One of the most famous of the homicidal poisons and--in my opinion--not a particularly good choice. Yes, it’s amazingly lethal--a teaspoon of the pure stuff can kill in a few minutes. But it’s a violent and obvious death. In early March, in fact, an Ohio doctor was convicted of murder for putting cyanide in his wife’s vitamin supplements.

8. Aconite--A heart-stoppingly deadly natural poison. It forms in ornamental plants that include the blue-flowering monkshood. The ancient Greeks called it “the queen of poisons” and considered it so evil that they believed that it derived from the saliva of Cerberus, the three-headed dog guarding the gates of hell.

9. Silver--Swallowing silver nitrate probably won’t kill you but if you do it long enough it will turn you blue. One of my favorite stories (involving a silver bullet) concerns the Famous Blue Man of Barnum and Bailey’s Circus who was analyzed by one of the heroes of my book, Alexander Gettler.

10. Thallium--Agatha Christie put this poison at the heart of one of her creepiest mysteries, The Pale Horse, and I looked at it terms of a murdered family in real life. An element discovered in the 19th century, it’s a perfect homicidal poison--tasteless and odorless--except for one obvious giveaway--the victim’s hair falls out as a result of the poisoning!

Now that I’ve written this list, I realize I could probably name ten more. But I don’t want to scare you.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Pulitzer Prize–winning science journalist Blum (Ghost Hunters) makes chemistry come alive in her enthralling account of two forensic pioneers in early 20th-century New York. Blum follows the often unglamorous but monumentally important careers of Dr. Charles Norris, Manhattan's first trained chief medical examiner, and Alexander Gettler, its first toxicologist. Moving chronologically from Norris's appointment in 1918 through his death in 1936, Blum cleverly divides her narrative by poison, providing not only a puzzling case for each noxious substance but the ingenious methods devised by the medical examiner's office to detect them. Before the advent of forensic toxicology, which made it possible for the first time to identify poisons in corpses, Gettler learned the telltale signs of everything from cyanide (it leaves a corrosive trail in the digestive system) to the bright pink flush that signals carbon monoxide poisoning. In a particularly illuminating section, Blum examines the dangers of bootleg liquor (commonly known as wood, or methyl, alcohol) produced during Prohibition. With the pacing and rich characterization of a first-rate suspense novelist, Blum makes science accessible and fascinating. (Feb. 22)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Deborah Blum's book contains plenty of crime-drama stories for readers who are fans of CSI, and the several critics who structured their reviews around this comparison heartily recommended the book. Those who evaluated the book as a work of history or popular science were also generally pleased; with her extensive experience as a science writer, Blum knows how to humanize molecules and atoms. What some reviewers asked, though, was whether Blum's decision to structure the book's chapters around the Jazz Age toxins of choice made it more difficult to focus on her human characters and their motivations. That weakness doesn't overshadow the overall high quality here.

Not Even Wrong
By Valentin Rodionov
I am a professor of chemistry at a major university, and Deborah Blum's book was an impulse buy for me.
After all, you can't go wrong with a popular science book about forensic toxicology and chemistry, can you?

It appears that this is the first book I regret buying for my Kindle (I am trying to get a refund now).
Most, if not all of the chemistry (and physics) in this book is entirely disconnected from the reality of science. Blum's treatment of poisons, analytical procedures and basic science ranges from simple misstatements, inaccuracies and misunderstandings to statements that are outright wrong. Some of these are listed below:

* The action of mustard chemical warfare agents has nothing to do with "becoming a ferocious form of sulfuric acid". Mustards act through alkylative damage of DNA (and other biomolecules).
* Sodium carbonate is not an acidic chemical.
* HCN is not a "potent acid".
* No additional source of hydrogen is needed to perform a Marsh test for arsenic.
* It is not likely that arsenic compounds will crystallize in the tissues of a poisoning victim.
* The Reinsch test is not a simple color test, as is implied by Blum's description. This is according to Gettler himself: [...]
* Electrical current is not measured in volts.
* Blum's description of radioactive decay, to borrow a phrase from Wolfgang Pauli, "is not even wrong".

This list is by no means comprehensive - these are just some of the many cringe-inducing parts in the book.
Blum spends pages upon pages on this bad science, talking about "ooze", "bubbling mess", "whizzing" elementary particles, "crystals of white arsenic" found in bodies, and "synthetic methyl alcohol called methanol".

It is utterly amazing and incomprehensible that this mistreatment of science was allowed to proceed past editorial stage. A reader with a very basic level of scientific literacy will likely notice many of the mistakes.
The fact that Blum used the period literature for her research is not an excuse for the extreme sloppiness of the book.
Fact-checking with a high school-level chemistry textbook would have gone a long way to make "The Poisoner's Handbook" at least readable.

The Not-too-chemical Handbook
By Andrew Charig
As I started "The Poisoner's Handbook", I thought this was a great book: a fine history of modern American forensic science, told through a double biography of Norris and Gettler, two of its major founders, and illuminated with engrossing tales of murder, mayhem, and nightmarish misadventure. That thought died as soon as I started to spot the technical explanations that were uninformative, misleading, or downright wrong. Will a dozen examples do?

p. 56: Hydrocyanic acid (HCN) is not a potent acid or corrosive; it is just about the weakest acid known. The fact that it is ferociously toxic has nothing to do with its acidic strength.

p. 22: Chloroform is not terribly corrosive; on keratinized tissue (normal skin) it has no effect at all.

p. 86: You cannot get anything by mixing arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and hydrogen (H2) because the first two are metals and the last is a gas that does not react spontaneously with either of them.

p. 179: Radium (Ra) does not react with water to produce radon (Rn); it produces Rn by atomic decay.

p. 183: Radium (Ra) does not decay to produce polonium (Po) and radon (Rn) - its atomic weight is far less than that of Po and Rn combined so it cannot produce both. It can decay to produce Rn, which then decays to produce Po.

p. 187: Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is not slightly acidic; as any highschooler knows, it is moderately basic.

p. 191: There is no such thing as diethyl phlatate. (Did Blum mean diethyl phthalate? Did anyone proofread this book?)

p. 201: Ethanol (EtOH) does not "dissolve" into acetic acid; it is converted to acetic acid by tissue enxymatic activity.

p. 206: DDT is not an organophosphate; it contains no phosphorous at all. It is a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
passim: Blum does not seem to realize that wood alcohol, methyl alcohol, and methanol are just three different names for the same compound, used at different times as chemical terminology became more precise over the years.

And at least two misconversions from US weight units to metric.

How Blum got a Pulitzer for popular science writing and a job teaching it at the university level I cannot imagine; perhaps her zoology is better than her chemistry (it would have to be much, MUCH better), but her chemistry is far too inadequate to qualify her to explain it to others.

I propose that henceforward any book purporting to explain chemistry for the layman should be vetted by a committee of ten members randomly chosen from the American Chemical Society, before it is let loose on the unsuspecting public. Why shouldn't popular science writings be subject to the same peer review that professional writings are?

If Blum had left out the chemistry or else got it right, this would be a four-star book; as it is, it's a one.

A Genuine, But Highly Entertaining, Poisoner's Handbook
By Lynne E.
I love reading about famous crimes, medical oddities, and cases solved by forensics. This book has them all, and is every bit as entertainingly well-written as my old favorite, THE MEDICAL DETECTIVES. by Berton Roueche.

Better yet, the title, THE POISONER'S HANDBOOK, is not just hyperbole. In describing famous New York City crimes committed with poison, the author discusses the chemical makeup, toxic effects, and early-20th-century sources of (1) chloroform, (2) methyl alcohol, (3) cyanide, (4) arsenic, (5) mercury, (6) carbon monoxide, (7) radium, and (8) thallium.

In reading this book, you will probably find that there is a lot you thought you knew but didn't really know about well-known poisons frequently encountered in mystery novels and television shows. Did you think that fast-acting cyanide delivers a "one whiff, you're done" death? Think again! Did you think that only Skid Row bums drank wood alcohol during Prohibition? Not so! Did you know that Marie Curie died of radiation poisoning? Probably, but did you know exactly how radium works in the body to produce aplastic anemia and death?

In reading this book, you will also learn about pioneering forensics efforts that required the grinding up of large samples of brain and organ tissue prior to laboratory testing. (In the early 20th century, testing was done with "wet" chemistry; today it is done with "dry" chemistry that only requires smears for testing.) The testing itself required many time-consuming steps and tricky procedures. Some of the testing involved tissue samples that were retained in room-temperature containers for weeks and months.

The book also tells the story of three great pioneers in forensics science--NYC medical examiner Charles Norris, his chief chemist, Alexander Gettler, and New Jersey medical examiner Harrison Martland. Norton and Gettler lobbied tirelessly against Prohibition, which caused countless deaths from bad booze (renatured industrial alcohol), and against other toxic commercial products sold for hair removal, better-looking skin, and generally improved health. Martland did important research into the effects of radium on factory workers who painted radium watch dials, and also lobbied against the sale of radium-laced health elixirs, such as Radithor. Some of these toxic products actually worked--until they succeeded in poisoning the user.

Although the book is an easy read, it is well-researched, and includes footnotes describing the author's sources. (My advance review copy did not include footnote numbers within the text, but presumably the numbers will appear in the final printed book.) The book also includes a useful bibliography of scholarly works on forensic toxicology.

Culture, Health and Illness, Fifth edition (Hodder Arnold Publication), by Cecil G. Helman

Culture, Health and Illness is the leading international textbook on the role of cultural and social factors in health, illness, and medical care. Since first published in 1984, it has been used in over 40 countries within universities, medical schools and nursing colleges. This new edition meets the ever-growing need for a clear starting point in understanding the clinical significance of cultural and social factors. The book addresses the complex interactions between health, illness and culture by setting out anthropological theory in a highly readable, jargon-free style and integrating this with the practice of health care using real-life examples and case histories.

Fully revised throughout, the fifth edition has expanded its coverage of topics that are challenging both the patient and the carer's understanding of health and illness: poverty and inequality of healthcare, genetics, biotechnology, the internet and health, chronic diseases, drug-resistant infections, changes in nutrition and body image, medical care of migrants, medical technology, global pandemics such as AIDS and malaria, drug and alcohol dependence, and patients' 'languages of distress', a complex topic central to the doctor-patient relationship.

In today's world of increasing cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of populations, Culture, Health and Illness is essential reading for students of medicine, nursing, psychiatry, public health, health education, international health and medical anthropology, across the globe.

What a waste
By W
Large amounts of information, but boring to say the least. Most of it is common sense. The main topic of the book is about medical anthropology.

Review
"This textbook will remain a staple in the educational setting for both student and teacher. If an O&P student needs one book on gait, this is that book. For practitioners, the textbook is a ready reference that can augment existing knowledge and inform clinical practice."

— Bryan Malas, MHPE, CO

"The greatest strength of the new edition lies in its logical, reorganized content presentation, which seamlessly interweaves the old and new into a single comprehensive text the practitioner will find valuable in both its breadth and currency. As with the first edition, this textbook will remain a staple in the educational setting for both student and teacher alike. If an O&P student needed one book on gait, this would be that book. For practitioners, the textbook is a ready reference that can augment existing knowledge and inform clinical practice."

— Bryan Malas, MHPE, CO, American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists

"...in summary, this second edition includes several excellent additions to a classic textbook which should be on the book shelf of ever postgraduate student studying human gait, and every physiotherapist with a specific interest in gait analysis."

– Marietta van der Linden, Physiotherapy

"This is a first-class publication on a very important subject not discussed as commonly as other issues in orthopedics. The authors are well-known experts and the book is the result of vast clinical and research experience. This is the best book available on gait analysis."

– Riad Barmada, MD, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, Doody Enterprises, Inc.

"Gait Analysis: Normal and Pathological Function is a comprehensive text for basic gait analysis, systematically covering the fundamental components of normal and pathological gait. The clinical focus of this text makes it a useful resource for clinicians and students of all levels."

— Dr. Vivienne Chuter,University of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, Physical Therapy Reviews

"Their excellent and subtle changes have enhanced the book’s value, both as a primer and as an encyclopedic reference on gait. The authors allude to what the observer "sees." New methods of gait analysis have more accurately characterized various parts of the gait cycle. Chapter 9 is really a summary chapter of the first part of the book, which covers normal gait. Valuably, it sums up the parts and puts them together. This chapter integrates the total limb function at each phase of gait, elevating observation to a more sophisticated understanding. The use of clinical photographs continues and helps readers relate the illustrated point to a patient or series of patients being treated- an especially valuable feature. The chapters on kinetics, running, and stride are updated and valuable. The chapter on dynamic EMGs has been expanded to discuss the relation of muscle control to the various aspects of gait, both normal and abnormal—an essential concept. Reading the first part of Gait Analysis: Normal and Pathological Function will add dimension to observing gait and will be ideal for providing readers having an advanced interest with a more complete and clear technical understanding. In either instance, reading this text and comprehending the data make this text clinically pragmatic and worthwhile."

– Alfred D. Grant, MD, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, New York, NY, JAMA

About the Author
Jacquelin Perry, MD’s interest in gait began in college (UCLA). A major in physical education (1935-1940) introduced her to anatomy and provided a strong background in kinesiology with application to sports. Part of this experience was her attendance at the Physical Therapy Clinic of the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital where she began her exposure to disability. Subsequently, she became a physical therapist (Walter Reed Army Hospital, 1941), which expanded her knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology, and disability.  Her physical therapy experience in Army hospitals during World War II provided a broad clinical experience (1941-1945). In addition to working with a regular flow of trauma patients, she spent 2 years at a center that had Army programs for poliomyelitis and rheumatoid arthritis. All 3 clinical areas involved a great deal of informal observational gait analysis as one sought to improve the patient’s ability to walk. During most of this time, she was also an instructor at two of the Army schools of physical therapy (Hot Springs, AR and Denver, CO). There she taught anatomy, kinesiology, and therapeutic exercise as well as the modalities. Both normal and disabled gait were strong elements of this program.  After the war ended, she used her GI bill to go to medical school (UC San Francisco, 1946-1950) for the specific purpose of becoming an orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Perry’s residency in orthopaedic surgery (UCSF, 1951-1955) occurred during the period when poliomyelitis and reconstructive surgery were strong clinical programs. Observational gait analysis and experience in correcting disabled gait became daily practice.

Her next move was to join the staff of the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. In 1955, poliomyelitis was the entire focus of the rehabilitation program. Disability of lower limbs, spine, and arms were all major concerns while bracing and reconstructive surgery received equal emphasis. Working with this program further expanded her knowledge of muscle function and gait disability. In addition, her experience in observing polio survivors exposed her to a number of different gait patterns as the type of paralysis resulting from this disease varies from patient to patient.  Following introduction of the Salk vaccine, polio was conquered so Dr. Perry and her colleagues redirected their attention to other types of chronic impairments. This change was the beginning of their intensive rehabilitation program for spinal cord injury, hemiplegia, arthritis, and children’s disorders (primarily muscular dystrophy, myelodysplasia and cerebral palsy). Later, amputee and problem back services were added. At first, the program was for general rehabilitation. Then as the patient groups became large, they formed separate clinical categories with a ward for each (1961). While continuing the polio spine surgery program, Dr. Perry also developed a stroke unit.

Responsibility for persons disabled by a stroke forced her to expand her analysis process, as the functional pathology of individuals with hemiplegia is much more complex than that of polio. Because the standard clinical examination findings correlated poorly with the gait dysfunctions, a system of observational gait analysis was initiated. Developed in conjunction with a group of knowledgeable and dedicated physical therapists, the Rancho Los Amigos Observational Gait Analysis System became highly organized. For the first time, there was a means of cataloging the multiple dysfunctions that occur with the various types of pathology. For the past 25 plus years, they have taught this program nationwide. The organizational background of this book is based on this program.

A second development was the gait laboratory (1968). Its initial purpose was to document the improvement from reconstructive surgery in patients who could not be returned to normal function based on traditional rehabilitation therapy. This system was designed to help ascertain whether surgery actually was the better alternative for these patients. Out of this beginning was developed a functional diagnostic system to be used for planning the reconstructive surgery of patients with spasticity. The emphasis of the program was, and still is, kinesiological electromyography because the primary disability of patients with spasticity is inappropriate muscle action (errors in timing and intensity). Footswitches were developed to define the patient’s stride characteristics, and an electrogoniometer to record joint motion during gait also was developed. Clinical service and research have had equal emphasis from the beginning. Another novel emphasis has been on energy cost analysis of walking. An outdoor court was designed where habitual gait could be studied (Dr. Robert Waters spearheaded this). Today, the Pathokinesiology Laboratory at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center is fully equipped with automated motion analysis (CODA™), force plates and walking aids instrumented with force transducers. All types of disability have been studied over the years and continue to be seen as the clinical need increases (cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, spinal cord injury, post polio, arthritis, joint replacement, amputees, myelodysplasia, and muscular dystrophy).

During her career, Dr. Perry has received numerous awards for her pioneering work in many areas of gait and orthopaedics. She received the Kappa Delta Award (Orthopedic Research Society, 1976) for landmark work with dynamic electromyography to define muscle function in cerebral palsy and the Isabelle and Leonard H. Goldson Award in Technology (United Cerebral Palsy Research and Education Foundation, 1981). She was a Shands Lecturer (American Orthopaedic Association, 1988) and received the Shands Award (Orthopaedic Research Society, 1999). Dr. Perry received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society (2000) and The Scoliosis Research Society (2008). In December of 2008, the University of Southern California dedicated the Jacquelin Perry Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory in her honor. Dr. Perry continues her lifelong dedication to the research and clinical application of gait. This publication encompasses the extensive work of Dr. Perry and her successful years as a therapist and a surgeon renowned for her expertise in human gait.

Judith M. Burnfield, PhD, PT is a most welcome co-author. She has excellent analytical skills and has an outstanding command of words. In addition, her scientific preparation and professional experience give her a unique perspective of impaired gait.

Dr. Burnfield’s interest in gait began during a clinical internship in 1986 on the Arthritis Service at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (Rancho). The analytic process encouraged during weekly gait sessions (many led by Dr. Perry) tapped into her investigative nature. Following graduation from the Physical Therapy Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1986), Dr. Burnfield accepted a position at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. Her initial work on the Ortho-Diabetes Service further sparked her passion for understanding gait. Differentiating the influence of human impairments from prosthetic alignment factors was essential for improving patient’s walking ability and helped her develop a greater appreciation for the role alignment, forces, and moments have on walking performance. During this period, Dr. Burnfield started teaching a course on prosthetics and orthotics in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Cerritos College (Norwalk, CA). Gait was a central component of the course.

Subsequent work on the Stroke Service, Gerontology Service, and in the Polio Clinic at Rancho expanded her knowledge related to the profound impact of weakness on movement disorders. It also highlighted the body’s exquisite versatility to compensate when sensation and control mechanisms remained intact (eg, with polio). Dr. Burnfield developed a strong appreciation for the role of lower extremity orthoses in promoting independence, particularly when the device’s capabilities were systematically matched to each patient’s unique impairments. During this period, Dr. Burnfield engaged in formal training to become a Rancho Gait Instructor. She then led gait sessions at Rancho and started teaching workshops around the country for therapists and physicians.

In 1996, Dr. Burnfield left her position as Director of Physical Therapy at Rancho to commence graduate studies in Biokinesiology at the University of Southern California (USC). Her doctoral research, under the advisement of Dr. Christopher Powers, focused on human and environmental factors contributing to slips and falls during walking. She co-developed and taught the introductory and then advanced observational gait analysis courses for students enrolled in the clinical doctorate of physical therapy program at USC. At the time of her enrollment in USC’s Biokinesiology program, she also pursued a position as a research physical therapist working in the Pathokinesiology Laboratory at Rancho due to her desire to enhance her clinical research skills related to normal and pathologic gait. Her work in the latter environment focused on clinical and research studies quantifying gait abnormalities through the analysis of kinematic (motion), kinetic (moment) and electromyographic (muscle activity) data. The unique research and teaching experiences in the two environments complimented each other well and provided a framework for her role instructing Biomechanics and subsequently Kinesiology in the Physical Therapy Program at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.

Following completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Burnfield engaged in a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Jacquelin Perry. This mentorship had a profound influence on Dr. Burnfield’s professional development for which she is most grateful. This focused period of inquiry provided a strong foundation for their subsequent collaboration on the second edition of this book.

In October 2004, Dr. Burnfield joined Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. She serves as Director of the Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering, Director of the Movement and Neurosciences Center and the Clifton Chair in Physical Therapy and Movement Sciences. Dr. Burnfield has developed a dynamic research laboratory that capitalizes on the close proximity of patients and clinicians, a strong network of research collaborators internally as well as from universities and industry, and a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students willing and eager to learn and contribute. Research efforts focus on developing and studying new treatments and technologies to help individuals with physical disabilities walk, exercise, and live more independently. The fully instrumented Chapin Gait and Motion Laboratory within the Movement and Neurosciences Center includes state-of-the art technology and software for conducting biomechanical and physiological analyses of movement function including a twelve-camera infrared motion analysis system, 16-channel and 10-channel portable electromyography technology, four force platforms, a footswitch system and plantar pressure mapping technology, and a 30-meter walkway with an overhead safety support track and full-body harness system.

Dr. Burnfield holds adjunct faculty appointments at Creighton University, University of Nebraska– Lincoln, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the University of Southern California. In addition to a vigorous research agenda, Dr. Burnfield continues to teach gait in the academic setting and presents both nationally and internationally on gait and rehabilitation related topics.

Showing the fascinating complexity of Gait Analysis
By Ulrich Vissering
A previous writers tries to tell us, that gait analysis with our own eyes and understanding is outdated in a high tech world. I disagree. As it is true for many steps in the process of finding the reasons of disorder and disfunction and working on solutions, as medical doctor or as physiotherapist, it is allways the core of real quality if one understands by himself and his education in the field, what some high tech apparatus tries to tell him, sometimes telling it wrong. So giving up all your knowledge and expertise into the hands of a computer, or even showing that you have no interest to get this knowledge in the first place, is a sure way to failure in the medical field. And by the way, gait analysis isnt some dry, boring stuff, in fact, it is fascinating to realize how very important it is to be able to identify the different stages of this very short moment, to find the fitting solution for your therapy. I am just a beginner after completing a first course in gait analysis lead by a german pupil of Jacquelin Perry, and as a doctor in a rehab clinic I can tell you, its very up to date. And talking about the high tech world, who is able to buy a technical system, the hard- and software for gait analysis, for example as a simple practitioner? Better take your time to get some education by experienced gait instructors, read this book and all what you need is in your head and hands, plus eventually a small camera to make a short clip for analysis and presentation on a Monitor.

Great book! Highly recommended
By Joseph Nesser
Love this book! It reminds me of the Neumanns kinesiology - clear, concise and to the point. The book does not overwhelm you with too many words on each page, and the illustrations are very helpful.

An excellent easy to read and understand guide to gait
By John M. Lahr
An excellent easy to read and understand guide to gait. Uses very simplistic line drawings that easily detail specific parts of the cycle as well as how the parts all work together. A def for anyone that needs to understand gait and gait analysis.
