About the Author
Kenneth Townsend earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991, two years after joining the faculty of the Department of History at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Townsend now serves as chair of the Department of History. He is the author of World War II and the American Indian (2000), South Carolina (2008) and varied articles, and he is revising a book-length manuscript addressing the World War II home front in the Southeastern United States. In summer 2006 Townsend embedded with U.S. Army units in Kabul and Kandahar, Afghanistan and is now
completing a project titled “Shadows of War” that examines the personal imprint of war on soldiers and their families.
Mark A. Nicholas received his PhD from Lehigh University in 2006, and teaches at Florida Atlantic University. With Joel W. Martin, he edited Native Americans, Christianity, and the Reshaping of the American Religious Landscape (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2010). He has several ongoing projects, including a book about the Seneca Indians for Michigan State University. Press and a book about the Shawnees in Kansas for University of Arizona Press.

A survey book, finally

This book is amazing and one of a kind. There is Calloway's First Peoples, and The People by Salisbury, Hoxie, and Edmunds. What Townsend and Nicholas have provided is a compelling narrative that puts Native Americans at the center of American history. Love the chronologies and mini-chronologies, and maps!!! We finally have a survey textbook in the field of Native American history with lots of maps--students can follow the places and movement of native groups. Also, this book covers the Spanish material with as much power as the typical focus on events in the British and French colonies. That continental focus continues forward, into the period of the transition of Spanish to Mexican rule, to the role of the powerful Comanches on the borderlands, to American expansion into Texas, and American expansion westward. It tells the story of California, Russia America, and the roles of a vast number of native peoples in the west. Its coverage of the twentieth century is the best offered. There are some typos, but these can be ironed out, hopefully, in a second edition. Otherwise, these two historians have done a service to the profession. Students will find it accessible--the profiles are well selected, as are the documents, and there are more documents online. Source readers, according to Pearson's online webpage, will soon accompany this wonderful survey textbook. And it is that. The first survey textbook that synthesizes old scholarship with the most up to date interpretations (particularly in vibrant fields such as the Spanish borderlands).
