Galileo, Bellarmine, and the Bible, by Richard J. Blackwell

Considered the paradigm case of the troubled interaction between science and religion, the conflict between Galileo and the Church continues to generate new research and lively debate. Richard J. Blackwell offers a fresh approach to the Galileo case, using as his primary focus the biblical and ecclesiastical issues that were the battleground for the celebrated confrontation. Blackwell's research in the Vatican manuscript collection and the Jesuit archives in Rome enables him to re-create a vivid picture of the trends and countertrends that influenced leading Catholic thinkers of the period: the conservative reaction to the Reformation, the role of authority in biblical exegesis and in guarding orthodoxy from the inroads of "unbridled spirits," and the position taken by Cardinal Bellarmine and the Jesuits in attempting to weigh the discoveries of the new science in the context of traditional philosophy and theology.

A centerpiece of Blackwell's investigation is his careful reading of the brief treatise Letter on the Motion of the Earth by Paolo Antonio Foscarini, a Carmelite scholar, arguing for the compatibililty of the Copernican system with the Bible. Blackwell appends the first modern translation into English of this important and neglected document, which was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books in 1616. Though there were differing and competing theories of biblical interpretation advocated in Galileo's time—the legacy of the Council of Trent, the views of Cardinal Bellarmine, the most influential churchman of his time, and, finally, the claims of authority and obedience that weakened the abillity of Jesuit scientists to support the new science—all contributed to the eventual condemnation of Galileo in 1633. Blackwell argues convincingly that the maintenance of ecclesiastical authority, not the scientific issues themselves, led to that tragic trial.

A Must Read Book About the Galileo Controversy
By A Customer
This well researched and written book focuses upon the impact of the Counter-Reformation upon Biblical exegesis (interpretation), as determined by the Council of Trent, and how the Catholic Church managed to stumble into perhaps the most humiliating mistake in its long history--the condemnation of the Copernican view of the solar system. Surprising, to me at least (I am not Catholic), is the fact that this book was published by the University of Notre Dame Press, since it pulls no punches in assessing who was at fault and why.

It is one of those rare books that provide a whole new way of looking at a familiar subject. Highly recommended.

Petty wars
By Viktor Blasjo
The counter-reformation unwittingly provided the weapons with which Galileo would be attacked. Luther challenged church authority and emphasised reliance on and personal understanding of the Bible (sola Scriptura). The Council of Trent was formed to answer this threat. The Council decreed that: God's message was conveyed both through the Bible and unwritten traditions; interpreting the Bible is a matter for the appropriate authorities; "in matters of faith and morals" no one shall dare to interpret the Bible contrary to church tradition and "the unanimous agreement of the Fathers."

Bellarmine, the most important authority in Galileo's time, interpreted these decrees in the most unfortunate way possible for Galileo. Firstly, he took the relation of Bible and tradition to be complementary rather than concurring. Thus the Fathers' approval of geocentrism is independent rather than redundant evidence. Secondly, he took "unanimous agreement of the Fathers" to be achieved when one Father spoke on a matter while the others remained silent. Thus strengthening this independent evidence. Lastly, he interpreted "matters of faith" in such a way that everything in the Bible (geocentrism, the fact that Tobias had a dog, etc.) is a matter of faith. This is the crucial point in Bellarmine's letter to Foscarini. Foscarini and Galileo had a reasonable argument that Copernicanism was not in conflict with the Fathers or the Counsil, but these authoritative interpretations by Bellarmine effectively made any further debate impossible ("checkmate," as Blackwell says).

But Bellarmine and the church establishment had no interest in bringing about Inquisition proceedings. However, Galileo's Aristotelian enemies (with whom he had debated on floating bodies and mechanics) saw an opportunity. By persistently and prominently accusing Galileo of arguing contrary to scripture they forced him into a dilemma: either let the argument stand unopposed (thus blocking his theories from being accepted and pursued) or get involved with the dangerous matter of scriptural interpretation. Galileo chose the latter option; now all the Aristotelians had to do was to sit back and watch the vultures mince this easy pray. Caccini, a petty priest and "a thoroughly nasty person," took the bait and unwittingly executed the Aristotelians' plan. He preached against Galileo with such fervour that his superior had to send Galileo a formal apology (p. 69). And with considerable effort and calculated deceit he managed to force the matter onto the initially reluctant Inquisition (p. 112).

"Two truths cannot contradict one another"
By AmazoNan
If you want to have a better understanding of what really happened between Galileo and the Church, this book is a good place to start. Blackwell tries to deal fairly with the complex religious and sociocultural backdrop of 16th century western civilization. He points out, for instance, that the Church commissioned Copernicus to save appearances of the incorrect calender predicted by the geocentric theory of Ptolmey, and also that many Jesuit scientists of the day were, at one point, sympathetic to the heliocentric theory being defended by Galileo.

The book acknowledges that, as a devout Catholic himself, Galileo offered detailed explanations of why scripture and science do not conflict in the proposition that the Earth moves around the Sun. The explanations, translated from his own words, are inspiring, and his concepts are surprisingly modern. However, although there were rational Catholic authorities who understood that scripture and science must agree on the same physical truths about the world, they were unfortunately overridden― in the case of heliocentrism― by more powerful legates with an opposing ideology. For someone with a scientific mindset, the key issue that requires our daily vigilance is the unjustifiable silencing of free thought and the abuse of power that can result from centralized authority.

Commentary on Galatians (Fathers of the Church Patristic Series), by St. Jerome

Prior to the middle of the fourth century, the exegesis of St. Paul had been monopolized by Greek and Syriac commentators. Then, in the space of half a century (c. 360 - c. 409), there appeared no less than 52 commentaries by six different Latin authors. This sudden flurry of literary activity has been dubbed the western "Renaissance of Paul." Jerome's commentaries on four Pauline epistles (Galatians, Ephesians, Titus, Philemon), which he composed in 386 shortly after establishing himself in Bethlehem, occupy a central place in this relatively short but prolific segment of the history of Pauline exegesis in Latin.

Jerome was the greatest biblical scholar of the ancient Latin church, and his Commentary on Galatians is one of the crowning achievements of his illustrious career. It far outclasses the five other contemporary Latin commentaries on Galatians in its breadth of classical and patristic erudition, Hebrew and Greek textual criticism of the Bible, and expository thoroughness. It is unique also because it is the only one of the Latin commentaries to make the Greek exegetical tradition its main point of reference. Jerome's Commentary in fact preserves, in one form or another, a treasure-trove of otherwise lost Greek exegesis, particularly Origen's Commentary on Galatians, from which he worked very closely when composing his own work.

Jerome's Commentary on Galatians is presented here in English translation in its entirety. The introduction and notes situate the Commentary in its historical, exegetical, and theological contexts and also provide extensive coverage of ancient and modern scholarly debates about the interpretation of Paul's epistle.

Magic Book of Leadership Secrets
By Paul Gustavson
This book maybe one of the best leadership resources I've seen in years. I'll put this right up next to Simon Sinek's "Leaders Eat Last", Dr. Henry Cloud's "Boundaries for Leaders", or even Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson.

John delivers great content by focusing on the questions that he asks himself and his team, and the questions other leaders ask him. I find the questions themselves provide great value. I can use them with my team, my inner circle, my peers, my mentors and myself.

Then, what's even better, is that John gets behind the questions. Like a great magician revealing the secrets of his craft, John reveals the leadership principles of how to see through the challenges that leaders often face.

I can't imagine a leader not getting value out of this book, and I am looking forward to masterminding this book further with my peers In the weeks, months and years ahead.

Good leaders know what they don't know.
By Dave Gambrill
It's been said that the more your organizational authority increases, the more your organizational IQ decreases, and asking great questions can help give you new information and a new perspective. In this book, John Maxwell suggests many excellent questions that you should be asking yourself as a leader like: Am I investing in myself? Am I staying in my strength zone? Am I spending time with the right people? He also outlines questions you should be asking your team: What do you think? I can I serve you? What did you learn? What do I need to know?

Each chapter starts with an overarching question and then digs deeper with more powerful questions, some of which were submitted by John's clients, readers, and members of The John Maxwell Team (coaches, speakers, trainers).

This book is an excellent resource for all leaders, and one I recommend you get in hard copy because you will want to pull it off the shelf and refer to it often.

Helpful For Coaching Clients Or New Leaders
By Christine Abraham
Good Leaders Ask Great Questions by John C. Maxwell is a basic leadership book. The focus of the book is in alignment with the title. Maxwell uses examples from his own leadership experience, sharing successes and failures. The common theme of asking questions is divided into to parts: Questions John Maxwell Asks and Questions Leaders Ask Him. Most emphasis is placed on answering questions from leaders, such as:

** What must I do to lead successfully?
** How does leadership work?
** How do I get started in leadership?
** How do I resolve conflict?
** How can I succeed?
** How can I successfully navigate leadership?

The book is informative, yet some of his other books are much better. This book reminded me of a summary of coaching calls or perhaps a solution to managing coaching clients. The structure is repetitive and the book loses it uniqueness after the "Ask question" concept is grasped. I'm a huge fan of John Maxwell books, yet I found this one a bit too simplistic and geared primarily to new leaders.

Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is excellent and one of the required books for my pastoral leadership class at Liberty University. Failing Forward is my favorite Maxwell book and I've recommended it many times to friends. I've read both of these books several times and they will continue to be reference books in my leadership library!

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

97 Orchard Street, New York: Stories of Immigrant Life, by Linda Granfield

Imagine growing up on Orchard Street in 1916. If you were a member of the large Confino family you’d be living in 325 square feet of space. The only fresh air and natural light would come from the two windows in the front room. No heat, no water, no bathtub, no shower. Toilet in the hall.

The Confinos’ apartment is only one part of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, an extraordinary facility in New York City. The Museum has restored 97 Orchard Street to provide us with an opportunity to understand the immigrant experience shared by millions who have come to North America.

In text and with archival photos, Linda Granfield tells the story of four families, including the Confinos, who called 97 Orchard Street home, and provides information about the period, the history of the house, and the neighborhood, bringing to life conditions that were familiar to immigrants in many of North America’s big cities. The stories and archival materials are beautifully complemented by Arlene Alda’s sensitive photographs that evoke the hardship, the dignity, and the hope encompassed in 97 Orchard Street.

The book includes useful facts, information about the Museum and its efforts to help new immigrants who share similar experiences. Whether or not the reader can visit the Museum itself, this book is a valuable resource in understanding our own histories in North America.

From Publishers Weekly
Guided by the stories of four families known to live in the titular tenement, author Linda Granfield provides an illuminating look at life at the turn of the century and beyond in 97 Orchard Street, New York: Stories of Immigrant Life. Arlene Alda's sensitive b&w photographs of the building, which has been preserved as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, share space with historical images and artifacts from the museum's collection, as well as photographs of the neighborhood today.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-The Lower East Side Tenement Museum opened in New York City in 1994. "Urban archeology," "diligent research," and "interviews with former residents" facilitated the re-creation of this building that housed immigrants from the mid-1800s to its closing in 1935. Essentially a photo-essay of material from the museum, the text is divided into 13 brief sections beginning with "Mystery: The Gumpertz Family." Readers learn that "Julius Gumpertz walked out of the building-on a crisp October morning in 1874" never to be heard from again. Working as a seamstress, his wife managed to support her four young children, one of whom "died of diarrhea, an all-too-common fate for nineteenth-century infants." Each black-and-white photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption. Other sections introduce three more families and also tell their stories through artifacts and oral histories. Additional segments such as "Early Immigration" and "Ellis Island: Portal of Hope" deal with more general aspects of immigration at that time. Chock-full of the simple details of everyday life as well as larger tales of human joy and suffering, this volume presents an intriguing window into urban tenements just before and after the turn of the century. Be aware that there is no table of contents, no index, and the information presented does not follow a simple time line. However, the book is a useful addition to general collections, especially as a starting point for further investigation.

Review
“Chock-full of the simple details of everyday life as well as larger tales of human joy and suffering, this volume presents an intriguing window into urban tenements just before and after the turn of the century.”
–School Library Journal

“Alda’s contemporary photos add a beautiful artistic note…The flavor of life on Orchard Street from the end of the nineteenth century through the 1930s can be tasted here.”
–Booklist

“Right away Granfield gives her readers sensory images to latch onto. And the photographs further engage us: when we see photos of the tiny rooms, the beds doubling as sofas, the squalid toilets...we can much more easily imagine what it was like to live there in that time.”
–Quill & Quire

“This non-fiction book is a great starting point for any social studies or history project…97 Orchard provides a lot of information without being encyclopedic in tone or presentation.”
–Florida Times

“…[a] wonderful resource guide…Researched and presented with the quality we’ve come to expect in a Granfield title, this is a winning resource for students studying the history of immigration to the New World, ethnic cultures, or turn-of-the century lifestyles.”
–Rockliffe Reviews

“The slim, delightful volume of the stories of four immigrant families who settled in a dark tenement building on New York’s Lower East Side humanizes the struggles and triumphs of those families…Kudos to the museum and to this book that offers a look back on our collective ancestors.”
–Kliatt

great pictures, personal stories
By Bananimal
This is a great glimpse at early immigrant life in New York City. The pictures were amazing and the stories that went with them really gives the reader an idea of what it was like to live as a new arrival to America. I would have enjoyed it more if it were longer but the stories and pictures provided were great.

'The fascinating and diverse descriptions contained in this text begin the process of developing indigenous understandings of music therapy in group work and alert the reader to issues for future exploration. A fascinating text, describing a range of clients - I highly recommend it.' - Nordic Journal of Music Therapy Group music therapy has been widely practised for many years, especially within institutional settings, and features substantially in training, yet there has been no publication devoted to the discussion of this area of therapy. Music Therapy and Group Work fills this gap by bringing together the experiences of group music therapy practitioners who work with diverse client groups in various settings. Whilst acknowledging that the practice of group music therapy incorporates many theoretical and practical issues in common with those of mainstream group work, the editors emphasize that this field needs to develop some further theoretical discourse of its own, primarily because its main contrast from regular group work is that it draws on a non-verbal medium alongside the ordinary verbal exchange. The book combines clinical examples with theory to provide a comprehensive introduction to group music therapy. Practitioners not only of music therapy, but also those working in related disciplines, will find this to be an informative and stimulating read.

Review
''Matt Ritter's fascination with trees shines through in this wonderful book. Accurate and thorough but also very readable and well-illustrated, this is an excellent identification guide and at the same time a celebration of the trees that grow in California's cities and towns. Anyone who is curious about trees is sure to find education and inspiration in these pages.''--David Sibley, author of The Sibley Guide to Trees and The Sibley Guide to Birds

''Ritter's work is great motivation for those of us who are intellectually adventurous within the playground that Mother Nature has given us.''--Jamie Durie, Host of America's longest running gardening program, ''Victory Garden''

''In simple and lucid prose, combined with his own photographs, Ritter teaches us how to look at a tree, how to identify it, how to use it, and, most importantly, how to enjoy it.''--Richard G Turner Jr, editor of Pacific Horticulture

''This is a great tree guide for all who also appreciate the historical perspective of our trees in California and their impact on our society, culture, and our environment.''--Pamela Geisel, coordinator, Statewide Master Gardener Program, and horticulture advisor at UC Cooperative Extension

''At last, a great reference to California's most commonly introduced landscape trees!''--Tom Elias, author of Trees of North America

''A refreshing new reference with enough authoritative details, including up-to-date taxonomy and reflective graphics coupled with good cultural interest comments, suggests that this is a first grab reference for both students and environmental masters alike.'' --Mr. David Dockter, environmental planner and arborist for the city of Palo Alto and director of the International Society of Arborculture

Handy guide to California street trees
By Jennifer Mo
In the three weeks that I've owned this book, I've been able to identify dozens of trees in my neighborhood -- brush cherry and holly oak in my complex, Brisbane box in the supermarket parking lot, Bradley pear at the post office. Although by no means comprehensive, A Californian's Guide to the Trees Among Us is a huge improvement over my previous tree identification strategy (scrolling through pages of image search results for 'tree with bright pink berries').

Assuming you live in California and have an interest in trees, this is a great starter field guide that not only profiles lots of common street trees (over 150 of them), but also provides the basics on how to look at trees and talk about them. There's an non-illustrated identification key in the beginning, but the book (divided into gymnosperms, angiosperms, and palms) is mostly composed of full color tree profiles, arranged by Latin name. (If you're new to trees, you may end up flipping around a lot at first.) Each profile contains full color photographs of the tree and its most distinctive features -- e.g. the leaves, bark, flowers, or seeds. Unlike most field guides, Ritter's text offers plenty of interesting, eclectic factoids about each tree. If you're a nerd, you might find Trees Among Us to be a fun read in its own right. I definitely did. Check out the profile on dogwood for Ritter's most droll entry.

A few usability quibbles: in focusing on just the most distinctive features of each tree, Ritter doesn't always include a close-up of the leaves, which can be annoying especially if the features he does include (like flowers or fruit) don't happen to be on the tree at the moment. There were a few times I thought he should have included more photos (such as the highly distinctive bark of the strawberry tree) or different ones (the crape myrtle in bloom rather than with just leaves). Finally, the index, which is a good place to go if you can't remember the Latin name of a tree, often lists a tree under several different pages without indicating which is the main profile. Start flipping.

These are minor drawbacks to what is overall a very user friendly, accessible, and nicely organized field guide that will have you eyeing your neighborhood trees with new appreciation. At about 150 pages, Trees Among Us is just small enough to be portable in a book bag or large purse. There's even a ruler printed on the back of the book for measuring leaves, pods, or other tree parts. I'm grateful to Matt Ritter for reminding me that nature really is everywhere, even in boring suburban California. If you're not in California, you might be more interested in Arthur Plotnik's The Urban Tree Book: An Uncommon Field Guide for City and Town.

Love this book
By Amazon Customer
This is a tree lovers book. What a pleasure it is to be able to identify a beautiful tree, and learn a bit about its origins and habits.
I've become a tree watcher as others are bird watchers.

This is the book I return to over and over again to help me identify the trees in California.
From this book I've learned how to look at trees carefully and to note the type of leaf, bark, and flower that can than lead to a confident tree identification. Armed with the name of the tree, it is easy to move on to other guides or internet searches to find more in depth information, if needed.

Ritter includes lists of the most commonly cultivated California native and urban trees.
Also included are keys to identification by group. For example Group 7 is trees with simple, opposite, or whorled leaves. This is a great way to begin the identification process.

I've especially appreciated the pronunciation guide for the Latin names, the histories, the short quotes about trees, along with the photos of trees, leaves, flowers and seeds. Now I'm able to name the Cassia leptophylla (Golden Medallion Tree) that I've admired, differentiate between the palms, maples and eucalyptus---and sound like I know something!

Underwhelming but useful
By J.H.
As my headline states: this book was underwhelming but useful. I volunteer for an environmental organization that plants trees all over Los Angeles in urban, suburban, and wild land. As such, I often get questions about what kinds of trees grow here. When the author did a workshop at a local community festival I thought this would be a great resource to help me make sure I'm giving the most accurate information possible. While this book is quite useful in identifying different species of trees (high marks for that), if you want more in-depth information on particular species this is not the resource for you. It is merely a field guild first and foremost for identification.

If you're looking for ideas on what to plant in your yard I would not recommend this book. The author does not keep his writing unbiased and even goes so far as to praise eucalyptus which have proven to be one of the most destructive invasive species in California. To the unknowing reader, trees such as eucalyptus and ficus are presented, by this book, as aesthetically pleasing and gems of the urban forest, but there is little focus on the hazardous nature of these plants and why they shouldn't be planted here in the first place (uplifting sidewalks, digging into water manes, fire hazard, disease prone, weedy, etc).

It would have been nice to have alternatives mentioned and not just to counter the invasive exotics but also new species of trees that aren't widely cultivated in CA but could be useful here without being invasive. For example, what species could we introduce that are more fire, drought, and flood resistant, have beautiful rare foliage, or would grow better in the elements of the city landscape (confinement, heat, pollution)? The author offers a great pie chart in the first chapter which displays the diversity of tree species planted in CA from different parts of the world. Australia, not surprisingly, is the number one source. Since this book only focuses on the most widely planted trees in CA, it offers little recommendation for improvements in our cultivation of tree species to improve the health of California's urban forests and thus our cities. As such, most of this book features Australian trees, then South East Asia, and so on. Native CA plants get the slimmest glimpse in this book.

Good if you only want a field guide for identification. Not good if you want detailed information about individual species or alternative species that would also do well in our west coast marine climate.
