I learned a lot! But make the investment and buy physical for this one.
By Joshua Wolfe
Very informative read, but skip the e-book if you're considering this. Most of the images used as examples by the book's narrative are stripped out. If you don't mind missing out on visual context whenever the book uses it, and just want the raw text, it's probably okay. The huge reduction in cost might make that pretty compelling, but I personally kept feeling like I was reading an unofficial or draft copy whenever a page with an illustration came along.

This is James Kochalka at his very best.
By OoO.
The stories are funny and I consider them to be pretty deep, with interesting commentary on trends and interactions between people and such, handled in a straightforwad way but never preachy or excessively in-your-face.
The art is simple, clear and legible, with a whimsical atmosphere seeping throughout the book.

I really loved it, I just regret it was so short, but the book offers great rereadability.
I hope there's more of this coming at some point in the future !

Review

"I have tried many a collection of readings claiming to capture the essence of critical pedagogy and theory for students. It was not until I found The Critical Pedagogy Reader that I was satisfied. The editors have managed to not only trace the fine historical points and lineages of critical pedagogy, but have compiled a group of articles covering all the gender, class, language, access, race, ethnicity, existential, and classroom concerns that critical pedagogues must address every day. In this age of hyper control and accountability, The Critical Pedagogy Reader not only skillfully identifies and interrogates the oppressive and marginalizing tendencies of institutional education, but it also provides strategies for a future of hope."
--Douglas McKnight, Associate Professor of Curriculum Studies, The University of Alabama

"The editors pull together classics from the history of critical pedagogy, and freshen them up with insightful commentary and lists of questions for discussion. This is a collection of the best work in the field, and should introduce a new generation of students and teachers to the powerful messages of critical pedagogy scholarship."
--Jean Anyon, author of Radical Possibilities: Public Policy, Urban Education, and A New Social Movement

The Criticial Pedagogy Reader
By Logan
The book provides an extensive and and up-to-date view of the important issues in critical pedagogy. It can be an indispensable source for future teachers and professional in the field of education. The articles are thought-provoking and analytical. The book can arguably be a reference material for policy-makers and administrators. While it may be missing practical advise, it makes up for it by offering fresh outlook on how education can be transformed to be more representative and equal.

A dialogue on critical pedaogy
By Jennifer Y
This is a great compilation of essays in the field of critical pedagogy. The reader is divided into eight parts. The introduction and Part I lay out key terms and themes in critical pedagogy, while not essentializing the field. I appreciate how the reader includes critiques of the field in an honest way, stating that these critiques "prompt a deepening consciousness"--demonstrating a commitment to dialogue. The range of topics in the following parts demonstrates how critical pedagogy speaks to pressing issues in education today such as social class, race, sexuality, teacher education, and critical media literacy. The introduction to each part includes brief summaries of the essays (very helpful in getting a sense of what each essay is about as well as understanding what the essay brings to the reader) and questions for reflection and dialogue (a good tool for starting discussion in the classroom).

I use articles from this reader in a "diversity" course for undergraduate and graduate students in teacher education. The essays generate discussion on topics of diversity without oversimplifying or perpetuating stereotypes about students of color and other students who are dehumanized by schooling.

Finally, there is a list of "suggested readings for further study" at the end of each part. It makes the reader an excellent resource, not only for the essays that are included, but with a very thorough list of related research and scholarship.

Inorganic Chemistry, by Gary Wulfsberg

This is a textbook for advanced undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses, covering elementary inorganic reaction chemistry through to more advanced inorganic theories and topics. The approach integrates bioinorganic, environmental, geological and medicinal material into each chapter, and there is a refreshing empirical approach to problems in which the text emphasizes observations before moving onto theoretical models. There are worked examples and solutions in each chapter combined with chapter-ending study objectives, 40-70 exercises per chapter and experiments for discovery-based learning.

Good breadth of topics but boring and a bit cursory
By Craig MACKINNON
Wulfsberg's Inorganic Chemistry manages to escape the obvious pitfalls of a first-edition text: it is not similar to other texts already on the market, and it is fairly error-free. Being error-free is no mean feat, especially when you consider that Shriver and Atkin's 3rd (!) edition of their text is rife with mistakes. In fact, in many ways this Wulfsberg offering is better than any other inorganic text on the market. There are also some serious drawbacks, however.
First the positive. I've already mentioned the fact that there are few errors. Another BIG adavantage is the scope of the text: it covers the entire periodic table. The introductory chapters (11 of 17) cover general trends, including symmetry, redox, crystal field theory, etc. Only 4 chapters are devoted to that insidious practice of qualitative description of compounds and their physical properties. Finally, the text is arranged so that chapters are roughly independent - it is not a detriment to skip over a chapter here and there if your course content so requires.
Unfortunately, these positives are almost evenly balanced by some serious (in my opinion) negatives. For starters, the text is boring! Even I, the professor, find it difficult to read. Part of the problem is that the author seems to think that 2 pages of text is better at explaining something than a half-page picture. This makes for heavy reading when trying to study! Secondly: there is too much hand-waving description relative to hard chemical theory. This may be fine for a 2nd-year level course, but most professors will want a text that has enough depth that they can use it in a 3rd- or 4th-year course as well, and I'm afraid this is a little superficial in places. Finally, I have to question the fact that crystal-field theory has an entire chapter devoted to it, while ligand-field theory (and consquently, symmetry-adapted orbitals) is essentially ignored. In my experience, both as a student and as a prof, anyone who learns LFT finds it much easier and more satisfying than the gross simplifications (and outright errors!) of CFT.
I have used this text and Shriver and Atkins's text as assigned books for my 3rd-year inorganic courses. For my money, Shriver and Atkins, in spite of its overemphasis on physical chemistry and numerous errors, is still a better text. However, I'm anxiously looking forward to a second edition of Wulfsberg, as it wouldn't take too much effort to make it a superior product.

Inorganic chemistry taught seriously
By ichemalltheway
From an inorganic chemist's point of view this book is a complete delight. It discusses concepts very well and thoroughly and succeeds at tying up chapters together, something that very few inorganic books have been able to achieve. Roughly the first half of the book (Chapters 1-7) is spent on building a strong understanding of periodicity based on the elements' nuclear charge (as well as the effective nuclear charge) and their size in order to explain acid/base theory, salt-formation and precipitation, electrochemistry, and crystal/ligand field theory. Then, two chapters are devoted to group theory and its applications (IR and NMR spectroscopies). From there, the book takes a bold turn to discuss organometallic chemistry (as a full chapter) and broad, but relate-able classes of compounds among the various elements in the periodic table. The last two chapters (reaction mechanisms and spectroscopy) are a bit short for the amount of material the book needs to cover, but it is a good start before venturing into a graduate-level class devoting a semester to the material.

The negatives about this book, that I have heard in the past and are worth pointing-out, are that the book has very few illustrations (in fact the book is black and white), that the writing is at times dense, and that this book is not for newbies.
Addressing the first complaint, the more I read the book the more I realized that an illustration that would enveloped everything conveyed on a paragraph would be very difficult to design. I am willing to say that probably it would detract from the author's insight. On the other hand, the illustrations that were present in the book were of absolute necessity since I found myself referring to them multiple times as I read the chapter and that really strengthened my understanding of the concepts presented.
With regards to the second and third issues, the reading is a bit more technical than you would find in other books and it requires the reader to be comfortable with basic math and general chemistry. If your knowledge of general chemistry is not up-to-date then you will struggle through the material. Reading this book will require time and attention, but it will teach you to view chemistry like an inorganic chemist and that should be the goal of any book teaching this subject.

Inorganic Chemistry by Wulfsberg
By chemnut
I'm very happy and content with this book. I think I have finally found an inorganic chemistry book that doesn't skim through important concepts and just lists reaction after reaction. I have begun reading the book not that long ago, so this review isn't representative of the whole book (yet), but so far from what I read I can notice a higher level of comprehension on the part of the author than any other book I've read before on the topic.
Also, props to the seller for sending the item in such a prompt manner and for providing me with a book that is nearly flawless in every aspect.

Thanks.

Pride, Prejudice & Secrets, by C.P. Odom

One of the turning points in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is Miss Elizabeth Bennet's passionate refusal and denunciation of the equally passionate but infinitely more repressed Fitzwilliam Darcy. However, unforeseen events can lead to the most unexpected consequences. During a visit with her friend Charlotte Collins at Hunsford, Elizabeth falls prey to illness for almost the first time in her life just as Mr. Darcy comes to call. Befuddled by her illness, she misinterprets his proposal of marriage, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is mistaken for acceptance of his suit by a joyous Darcy. By the time Elizabeth regains her health, it seems that every one of her acquaintance - and many outside of it - accept that she is engaged to the last man in the world she would ever consider. Elizabeth knows that her life will be forever changed, and the consequences will spread further than she imagines. From the author of: A Most Civil Proposal Consequences

Pride, Prejudice & Secrets
By maryann
When I ordered the novel I thought there would be many secrets revealed by the title of the novel and found that to be deceiving. All the secrets were those of the ones we read about in previous P & P variations. I felt there were parts I really liked as far as Mr. Collins standing up for Lizzy when she was ill; Caroline apologizing for her mistakes; Mary King's uncle for what he did to protect her; Wickham's behavioral changes; and that Jane didn't marry Bingley. However, I do think that throughout the novel we should have heard a little about how Jane and George were getting along. It kept you in suspense until the end of the novel and I kept wondering why????!!!
I did like the plot but it sort of dragged and I have read C.P. Odom's previous novels so I was disappointed to some extent with this one. Sorry but that is my honest opinion. Not all novels are to everyone's taste.

Engaging and Sweet Variation Story
By Sophia Rose
What if instead of getting the chance to declare in ringing tones that Fitzwilliam Darcy was the last man in the world she would consent to marry, Elizabeth Bennet was so ill from fever that her distracted response was taken as a yes and she was now engaged to a man she despised?

Yep, that is the basis of this new engaging story. Talk about enemies to loves trope, right? In the Regency Era, engagements were taken seriously much in the way of a formal contract and it was your honor, your reputation and your family's position in society along and the community along with that of the other party tat was at stake when one broke such a contract.

While dealing with a severe illness, Elizabeth first sets out angrily determined to sort it out with a sound refusal until caution forces her to let it play out. Darcy is blind to Elizabeth's less than enthusiastic response and behavior as he experiences love and determination to have his Elizabeth even if it must mean going against the most powerful members of his family and upper class society expectations. A cooler head prevails as Elizabeth thinks through her new tough situation and starts to see things aren't adding up about what she allowed herself to believe about the enigmatic, silent man who has declared his love for her. Is he the proud, arrogant, selfish and cold man or is he the caring, loyal, dutiful, shy, sometimes arrogant companion or maybe a bit of both? She is confronted with the evidence of her own eyes and experience that her first impressions about the man she detested might not have been accurate and others might have been right all along. The rest of the book tells how they begin again on shaky ground and build something new with the secrets from their pasts shadowing them. They observe and interact with family members, friends and even enemies living out their lives both at home and abroad.

It was a wholly encompassing story in that Darcy and Lizzy's story isn't told in isolation, but is nested amongst the story of several connected members of their extended friends and family group. There are multiple points of view and multiple story threads that weren't tough to follow, but I confess that some were more of interest than others. Let's just say that everyone gets more of a story and I mean everyone. It was like getting a set of stories all smooshed up into one that may be great or not so great depending on how you feel about the particular characters in question or how much extra detail away from the main plot interests you. I was fine with it being a nosy, curious sort, but I did feel the bulky quality of this story while in the middle. It was full of so many things since it went off in several directions. I wasn't expecting all that, but I was heartily happy for it nonetheless. The big impression for me is that there is just more all around of all the things I enjoy- story, characters, background.

There was one feature in the storytelling style that while it gave great insight, it was also distracting. There are bits of character monologue from whichever character is telling the story. It's in italic font so its obvious what it is, but its just the nature of it being there with the dialogue and actions that make it too much for me to concentrate on the story. It was particularly hard when in the beginning Elizabeth was having a whole conversation in her head each time she heard or did something. Darcy says something so off she goes into a long think, but oh yes, where were we? I'll take responsibility that maybe this little niggle is just me being distractable, but with all else going on (other storylines and POVs) it was a bit much for me. It added to my understanding of what all went into their thinking behind the words and actions, but didn't really forward the story.

The historical background is definitely well researched from the details of Regency daily life to the climate of society to the time period of a country at war. I love all that. It was there, but it didn't dominate over the plot. The war scenes were a good balance to show the reality, but softened since it is part of a romance story. The usual settings were well represented too in balls, family parties, London and country activities, but they were all driven by the characters and not just boring descriptive actions to fill things in.

I will also say that for those familiar with the original P&P story this one does some strong deviating when it came to the direction of the characters' lives and situations. It delved into motive more and allowed the reader to get to know so many more characters better through the additional plot threads and POVs. People can change and grow and people can be more than they seemed while others were exactly what they seemed. Without spoiling things which I would if I went into detail of explanation about that statement, I'll just say that I love where this story went for several minor characters that were not so minor as a result. The big surprise was original character Captain George Fitzwilliam the older, middle brother to Colonel Fitzwilliam. I loved his rugged, rough and piercingly honest personality particularly when he went up against the sly wit of Mr. Bennet. Delightful scene that left Mr. Bennet speechless with his shock and awe technique. I think he'll give even heart-stopping hero, Darcy, a run for his money with readers.

An extra feature that I found a nice bonus was the author putting out a Q&A about the book giving extra insight that I found informative and enriching to the reading experience.

All in all, I found it slow, but satisfying. Fans of Austeneque will definitely want to pick this up. Lovers of sweet historical romance with a large cast of characters, character-driven plotting and bonus romances included should give it a try too.

My thanks to the author and Meryton Press for the opportunity to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

Great character portrayal, easy to follow, humor and wit, it's a must read
By S. Schaffer
I loved this novel. This variation on p&p is unique, intriguing, and I felt the characters were very similar to the beloved originals. The author made this easy to follow with dates at each main event from different locations. In the beginning its days apart and toward the end months apart. Each chapter has quotes at the beginning which gives a hint into what to look forward to. Our characters thoughts are italicized throughout which really helps the novel flow. Even the descriptions of the carriage, furniture, sounds are well placed and yet not overdone. All our favorite characters are in this novel. Conversations are witty and humorous. Darcy is his usual self but even better. Darcy is well read and forward looking as well as a little reserved but with Elizabeth's help he relaxes a bit. Elizabeth initially is her impatient self but her reasoning ability shines through as she comes to accept her engagement and moves forward through marriage. Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam is funny and supportive and yet blunt when he feels it is necessary. He ends up married in this novel after being in Spain and its a real shocker. There is an additional Fitzwilliam brother named george and he's unusual, direct, and not very romantic but carries off one lovely young woman to Bermuda. Lady Catherine, Anne, mr. Collins, Charlotte, mr, and mrs. Bennet, the bingleys, the Bennet sisters wickham and mary king are all in this novel (all the original characters and a few new ones are in here). Mr. Wickham has a very surprising life in store. Who was to know mary king's uncle is in the mob so to speak? Wow, does he put poor old george thru his paces. I enjoyed one rascal dealing with another rascal. It was so much fun. Lady matlock and Lord Matlock are very surprising but I really enjoyed their characters. Lady Matlock endeavors to teach her sons about what makes a marriage work well from their youth up and it's quite enlightening. The descriptions of our characters personalities, illnesses, aging difficulties, are so right on target that you feel as if Lord Matlock is being nudged by you because he's so hard of hearing. The epilogue ties it all together nicely. After borrowing this from the kindle library I have every intention of buying it. I would say out of the hundreds I have read this is one of my favorites. There are a couple romantic intimate scenes mentioned upon marriage. These are not overly descriptive in nature more of a breast brushing type of thing. If it had been more descriptive of these intimate moments I would have rated it lower and or discontinued reading it. There really is something for everyone in this novel. Read it you will enjoy it! I read it twice.

Amazon.com Review
In this autobiography, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson says one of his prime business criteria is "fun." Fun made Branson a billionaire, and few business memoirs are one-billionth as fun as Branson's, nor as niftily written. Not only does it relate his side of near-death corporate experiences, it tells how the chairman literally cheated death by gun, shipwreck, and balloon crash.

Branson's empire--now encompassing interests in an airline, pop music, soda pop, e-commerce, and financial services--began when the dyslexic 16-year-old dropped out of school in 1968 to found the British magazine Student. His headmaster said, "I predict that you will either go to prison or become a millionaire." Briefly imprisoned for dodging customs selling records, Branson got his first million by releasing Tubular Bells, a maverick recording all the stuffy executives rejected. (1998's Tubular Bells III puts the series' sales over 20 million.)

Despite wild tales of Branson's wife-swapping and Keith Richards fleeing naked from Branson's studio at gunpoint with another man's woman, the most shocking parts of the memoir concern British Airways' James Bond-like "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic, resulting in the biggest award for damages in English history.

Though it's filled with famous names, witty quotes, and pulse-pounding accounts of lunatic balloon adventures, it is as a business thriller that the book really scores. His instinctive bet-the-ranch tactics could cost him all, or earn another billion. Either way, Branson will likely remain the most entertaining entrepreneur in Europe. --Tim Appelo

Review
"'Branson has a list of achievements unmatched by any other UK businessman. For anyone burning with entrepreneurial zeal, his reminiscences are akin to a sacred text', Mail on Sunday 'Grabs you on page one and never lets go... a rollercoaster ride... read what makes this brilliant and hardworking man tick', Spectator 'Candid and humorous', The Times 'An incredible man, and this is an incredible autobiography... a great read - sex, balloons, intrigue and money', Sunday Business 'Branson bares his soul - and everything else - in a non-fiction blockbuster... a must-read', Business Age"

From the Inside Flap
"Oh, screw it, let's do it."

That's the philosophy that has allowed Richard Branson, in slightly more than twenty-five years, to spawn so many successful ventures. From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), to retail (Virgin Megastores), and nearly a hundred others, ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none.

Losing My Virginity is the unusual, frequently outrageous autobiography of one of the great business geniuses of our time. When Richard Branson started his first business, he and his friends decided that "since we're complete virgins at business, let's call it just that: Virgin." Since then, Branson has written his own "rules" for success, creating a group of companies with a global presence, but no central headquarters, no management hierarchy, and minimal bureaucracy.

Many of Richard Branson's companies--airlines, retailing, and cola are good examples--were started in the face of entrenched competition. The experts said, "Don't do it." But Branson found golden opportunities in markets in which customers have been ripped off or underserved, where confusion reigns, and the competition is complacent.
And in this stressed-out, overworked age, Richard Branson gives us a new model: a dynamic, hardworking, successful entrepreneur who lives life to the fullest. Family, friends, fun, and adventure are equally important as business in Branson's life. Losing My Virginity is a portrait of a productive, sane, balanced life, filled with rich and colorful stories:

Crash-landing his hot-air balloon in the Algerian desert, yet remaining determined to have another go at being the first to circle the globe

Signing the Sex Pistols, Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Boy George, and Phil Collins

Fighting back when British Airways took on Virgin Atlantic and successfully suing this pillar of the British business establishment

Swimming two miles to safety during a violent storm off the coast of Mexico

Selling Virgin Records to save Virgin Atlantic

Staging a rescue flight into Baghdad before the start of the Gulf War . . .

And much more. Losing My Virginity is the ultimate tale of personal and business survival from a man who combines the business prowess of Bill Gates and the promotional instincts of P. T. Barnum.

Branson writes much like he conducts business
By Amazon Customer
Who among us has not craned our necks to gawk at a sprawling mansion and wondered, "Wow, what do THEY do for a living? I wonder if I could do that?"
Well, I've never cruised past Necker Island (one of the homes owned by the author), but I appreciate Richard Branson's candid answers to these old, nagging questions that we would all ask.
Branson has provided a simple, mostly chronological narrative about his spectacular failures in business - at age 14 and 15 - as well as his first success in starting a school newspaper at age 16.
His transition from the newspaper to Virgin Records HAS to be a business school classic, and his pattern of parlaying the earnings of one business to launch another has been repeated throughout his life. Now it would seem that he cannot go out for coffee without accidentally starting another Virgin brand subsidiary.
Branson writes much like he conducts business: he just dives right in and holds nothing back. He tells us all about his life and loves as well as his adrenaline-junkie airborne adventures.
The reader will have to forgive him for all the bragging. After all, "It ain't bragging if you really done it." It is, after all, an autobiography. And we DID ask the questions, or we would have if our boat went past Necker Island.

An Unconventional Approach to Business!
By O. Halabieh
Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "There was a great sense of teamwork within our family. Whenever we were within Mum's orbit we had to be busy. If we tried to escape by saying that we had something else to do, we were firmly told we were selfish. As a result we grew up with a clear priority of putting other people first."

2- "Later, it became apparent to me that business could be a creative enterprise in itself. If you publish a magazine, you're trying to create something that is original, that stands out from the crowd, that will last and, hopefully, serve some useful purpose. Above all, you want to create something you are proud of. That has always been my philosophy of business. I can honestly say that I have never gone into any business purely to make money. If that is the sole motive then I believe you are better off not doing it. A business has to be involving; it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts."

3- "In the many different business worlds I have inhabited since that night in prison, there have been times when I could have succumbed to some form of bribe, or could have had my way by offering one. But ever since that night in Dover prison I have never been tempted to break my vow. My parents had always drummed into me that all you have in life is your reputation: you may be very rich, but if you lose your good name you'll never be happy. Th( The thought will always lurk at the back of your mind that people don't trust you. I had never really focused on what a good name truly meant before, but that night in prison made me understand."

4- "It is always difficult to admit to a failure, but the one positive thing about the Event episode was that I realized how important it was to separate the various Virgin companies so that, if one failed, it would not threaten the rest of the Virgin Group. Event was a disaster, but it was a contained disaster. Every successful businessman has failed at some ventures. and most entrepreneurs who run their own companies have been declared bankrupt at least once. Rather than defaulting on our debts, we paid them up and shut down the magazine."

5- "It was one of our early acquisitions, and it gave us first-hand experience of all the pain that comes with laying off staff in order to turn a company round. It also demonstrated the benefits of growing a company from scratch, when you employ exactly those people you want, and really f establish the kind of atmosphere you want."

6- "In the same way that I tend to make up my mind about people within thirty seconds of meeting them, I also make up my mind about whether a business proposal excites me within about thirty seconds of looking at it. I rely far more on gut instinct than researching huge amounts of statistics. This might be because, due to my dyslexia, I distrust numbers, which I feel can be twisted to prove anything."

7- "As well as the constrictions of having to report to nonexecutive directors and shareholders, one of my main i frustrations with being a public company quoted on the stock market was the short-term view which investors took. We were under pressure to produce instant results, and unless we paid out a large dividend our share price would suffer. Japanese investors do) not invest with the dividend payment in mind; they look almost exclusively for capital growth. And, given that it can take a long time for investments to pay off. Japanese share prices are very high in comparison i with the company's earnings."

8- "It sometimes seems to me that I have spent all my life trying to persuade bankers to extend their loans. Given that Virgin's policy has always been to reinvest our surplus cash back into the business, our profit and loss accounts understate the underlying value of the businesses. This policy has worked over the long term. but whenever there is a crisis it disguises the real picture and means that the banks worry about our short-term profits and ability to pay our immediate interest."

9- "Obstinate as I am, I recognized that there is a time to back down. 'Live for the present -' I heard my parents' old maxim in the back of my head '- and the future will look after itself.'"

10- "You just need to look at where Virgin is now to see that business is a fluid, changing substance. As far as I'm concerned, the company will never stand still. It has always been a mutating, indefinable thing and the past few years have demonstrated that."

11- "My vision for Virgin has never been rigid and changes constantly, like the company itself. I have always lived my life by making lists: lists of people to call, lists of ideas, lists of companies to set up, lists of people who can make things happen. Each day I work through these lists, and it is that sequence of calls which propels me forward."

12- "In some ways it all boils down to convention. As you might have noticed, I do not set much store by such so-called wisdom. Conventionally, you concentrate on what you are doing and never stray beyond fairly narrow boundaries when running a company. Not only lo I find that restrictive, I also think that it's dangerous. If you only run record shops and refuse to embrace change, when something new like the Internet is launched you will lose your sales to the person who makes use of the new medium. It's far better to set up your own Internet operation to which your record shops lose business than lose it to somebody else's Internet operation."

Bokken: Art of the Japanese Sword (Literary Links to the Orient), by Dave Lowry

Focusing his expertise on the techniques and history of the bokken—the wooden training sword used by both ancient samurai and today’s swordsmen—the author maintains that training with the bokken is important on two levels for the modern practitioner: to build the physical stamina, rhythms, and adroit body movements of traditional swordsmanship and to achieve something of the animating spirit of the traditional swordsman. This history of the bokken combines the author's concise, eloquent writing style with more than 100 photographs to provide the reader with the traditional and modern perspectives of this vital, historically rich practice tool.

A good book for fundamentals-and attitude.
By R. A. Martinek
I was prepared to be disappointed-but was pleasantly surprised. I have studied the sword for years, and yet learned something from this book. For a beginner, too, its clear, concise explanations, coupled with well thought out photographs, will prove an excellent study guide or workbook. There are minor deficiencies, occasionally, but they will provide the student an incentive to put down the book and physically explore what Lowry is trying to demonstrate.

There are few like Musashi, who need little personal instruction. This book is not a substitute for a good teacher, but an excellent adjunct to one. The Way is not a set of rules. It is only the Way.

A good introduction...
By A Customer
As an Aikido student I was looking for a reference guide for katas and exercises so that I could practise outside the dojo. This book does not provide complex single katas ( it only has two very basic ones )so I was disappointed in that respect, however I did find the various introductory articles very educational and certianly relevant to any martial art whether you are trainig with a sword, a staff, or are doing empty handed techniques. My advice is: buy the book ad keep in mind Mr. Lowry's advice at all times but don't expect a visual feast of amazing pictures ( they are just plain black and white ). If you take this book as an introduction you will like it and hopefully it will push you to train harder and find out more about Japanese swordsmanship.
