Great textbook for wigmaking!

For anyone truly interested in actually making/building/repairing lace wigs, this book is a treasure! I was actually a little surprised that it goes into such detailed depth with regards to not only wigmaking, but all the other kinds of hairpieces and how they are made and when to use them(when working in theater or tv). The pictures are all clear, and well lit. There's even a few very short companion videos on an accompanying website showing knotting and sewing techniques....

The only thing i think would make this book better is an accompanying dvd to show more techniques in real time, and more websites/sources to actually buy tools and lace and hair from. The author makes references to one website in particular, which i visited, and there's very little actually on the website, sent them an email, to which i never received a reply. It can be hard to find all the tools/materials you need for wigmaking in one spot, so i've had to piece my kit together from several different places, including ebay. You've gotta shop around though, cuz several people sell the exact same things, some very reasonably, and some mark prices up dramatically to make a larger profit...
So in a nutshell, i would definitely recommend this book. It's like the "textbook" of wigmaking. The book, combined with the author's short vids, and user uploaded vids on youtube are all you need to learn to make/build/repair/knot lace wigs.

Oh Yeah

Amazing book! It has all about the different types of laces and hair and needles. It shows you how to take measurements when making custom wigs. It teaches you ventilating and wefting. Great facial hair chapter and styling chapter. Full of beautiful pictures! There's also a really cool section on building wigs with cage bases and finding jobs.

Absolutely fascinating and lovely.

Absolutely fascinating -- the walk through of how to make wigs also indirectly explains why they are so ridiculously expensive to buy pre-made.. This book is very straightforward and methodical, and includes a lot of pictures to help visualize the techniques it explains. I would give it six stars if I could.

Lawyer Cameron Thorne is trying to help an elderly couple keep their home when he finds himself dangerously immersed in an ancient conspiracy. Forced on the run with researcher Amanda, with deadly stalkers from two extremist factions hot on their trail, they begin to piece together information that ties together clues scattered across the Northeast. These clues reveal centuries old efforts by the Catholic Church to surpress information about Prince Henry Sinclair and the Templars that could tear the church apart if they survive long enough to reveal them. Brody delves right into the historical fiction field made so trendy by works like The Da Vinci Code and picks up where they leave off. The novel is extremely well-researched and self-aware, and Brody does a terrific job of wrapping his research in a fast-paced thrill ride that will feel far more like an action film than an academic paper, though both elements are distinctly present. That being said, by the end, the reader is uncertain how much of the theory Brody sincerely believes and how much just makes for a good story. Fans of conspiracy novels will enjoy this but it will be difficult for the average reader to separate this from the Da Vinci Code phenomenon and appreciate this on its own merits.

Great reading, great resource.

Any review of this book by a member of the St. Clair family may be viewed with some skepticism. However, I assure you, I am not a 'true believer' of the Prince Henry St. Clair story. This is why my family held the Atlantic Conference this past Fall in Halifax, Nova Scotia - to find the real evidence of early trans-Atlantic voyaging. There, I was lucky enough to meet David and receive an advance copy of his book.

David's writing style is thorougly enjoyable, but this book goes much further in that it's also a tremendous resource on all matters of this unsuual story of Templar history, the St. Clair family, diffusionism, petroglyphs, and much more. Being a member of the family who may descend from Jarl Henry St. Clair, it's difficult to show me new information, but Mr. Brody does and frames it with a knowledge of the plot lines of history that put it all in perspective.

I highly recommend this book.

An interesting blend of historical fact and theory...

Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower by David S. Brody was another book I got via an offer from a publisher. While the whole Da Vinci Code genre burned out rather quickly for me, this book offered a unique twist in that it was set on American shores. Add in the fact that all the historical sites and artifacts actually do exist, and you get an interesting blend of quasi-history told in a adventure thriller plot.

Cameron Thorne is a lawyer in New England, practicing some low-profile law. But a simple visit from an elderly couple changes his whole life (and eventually the history of the last 2000 years). They are being pressured to sell their home and property to a guy from Scotland who won't take no for an answer. Some research shows that this guy is a treasure hunter looking for lost Templar relics that he believes are buried on the elderly couple's property. But before Cameron can get to the bottom of the guy's story, things start going wrong. The treasure hunter ends up murdered, Cameron's life is threatened by black sedans that try to run him over, his dog is killed, and his brother loses his leg in an explosion prior to starting some digging on the couple's property. Seems that more than one group of people want to keep some secrets hidden forever. Cameron meets and teams up with Amanda Spenser, an attractive English lady who is employed by a group of people charged with maintaining artifacts related to a reported visit to America in the late 1300's by Prince Henry Sinclair. There's a shady element of this consortium, and Amanda decides to throw caution to the wind and team up with Cameron to dig into the story deeper than she's been allowed to in the past. The more they dig, the more attention they attract from secret Vatican groups who are willing to do whatever it takes to stop the two from undercovering a story that would rock the foundation of the organized Church...

While I liked the two main characters in the story, they are really there to help tell a historical story that you have to decide whether it's true (thus a conspiracy) or just a number of things that have been given far more meaning than they ever really had. The main contention is that Prince Henry came over to America with a number of treasures he was protecting from capture by the Roman Catholic church. The main treasure they had was evidence that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, had a daughter named Sarah, and that bloodline of Jesus still remains to this day. Add in worship of the "Sacred Feminine", Masonic societies, Kaballist groups, the Knights Templar, and many other murky secrets, and it calls into question all of what our modern day religions are based on. What adds realism in Cabal is that all the artifacts and locations used in the book actually do exist, so the story that Brody weaves is based on tales that have some basis in actual fact.

Do I accept everything in this book as actual truth? Not even remotely. But Brody puts an amazing amount of documented facts in Cabal which helps him to build his story and premise quite well. It worked for me on both an adventure level as well as a "should investigate this a little deeper" angle.

Move Over Da Vinci Code!

Nothing paints a mysterious and suspenseful story better than one based on a profound and ancient conspiracy. It is evident that David S. Brody knew this full well when he penned his excellently written and powerfully depicted novel of intrigue, suspicion and adventure titled, Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower. In this fast-paced and thorough treatise on ancient religious rituals and beliefs, Brody has woven together the ancient past and the curious present to create very compelling and believable tale of discovery and revelation.

Mr. Cameron Thorne is a lawyer going about his business. Representing an elderly man and woman who are trying to keep from losing their home, Thorne runs headlong into a mystery that has been hidden from the outside world for centuries. This is not just some family secret. In fact, Cameron Thorne has uncovered a conspiracy that could actually cost him his life. Long suppressed by the Catholic Church, this conspiracy is one that the Church must make sure remains unknown.

As a result of this tumultuous unearthing of ancient actions and deeds, Thorne has no choice but to strike and run, as his pursuers, religious fanatics from two radical groups, seek to hunt him down and silence him. Fortunately, Thorne does not have to fight this battle of wits and intrigue alone. He has the good fortune to meet one British researcher of ancient artifacts, named Amanda. She too is on the run, tracked by the same groups who are seeking to stop Cameron Thorne. Together, they form a bond and a single-purposed plan to tie the fragments of this deadly mystery together, which they gather from many places across the Northeastern part of the United States. These two realize that their enemies have no choice but to stop the two intruders from unearthing their historical secrets. For, if they Thorne and Amanda are finally able to repaint the entire picture, the truths they will have revealed risk shredding the church into pieces.

There is an obvious and appropriate comparison between Davis S. Brody's excellent work and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Though the strength of Dan Brown's work cannot be minimized, I feel that Brody's work is better researched, more believable and that Brody's style and plot possesses more elements that will entice the reader to want to dig into this book until the very last page. I felt as if I was there with these two very intelligent hunters of ancient lore.

The massive amount of research that had to go into this first-class novel must have been staggering. Coming from David S. Brody, great research and explanations one can wrap their hands around is what he does best. His others books, such as The Wrong Abraham, Blood of the Tribe, Unlawful Deeds and America's History are excellent examples of Brody's ability to take readers into another time and place and to make it come alive in our time, today. He has simply carried this tradition of excellence in writing over into this new novel, Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower. If you love intrigue, conspiracy and history all woven together into an action-packed suspense drama with deadly repercussions, then you will love this story.

Move over Da Vinci Code. There is a new novel, now in print, that bears all the makings of a phenomenal literary success. I highly recommend Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower by David S. Brody. It's a read that will keep you reading until the very end.

Debbie Troklus, CHC-F, CCEP-F, CHRC, CHPC is Managing Partner, Aegis Compliance and Ethics Center in Chicago, Illinois. She has more than 30 years of experience in the health care industry, and more than 16 of those years have been in the compliance arena. Prior to her joining Aegis, she served as the Assistant Vice President for Health Affairs/Compliance for the University of Louisville Health Science Center. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Health Care Compliance Association and the Advisory Board of the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics. She is President of the Compliance Certification Board and is a Past President of the Health Care Compliance Association.

Good CHC Prep

This is short enough that you can read it cover to cover in your hotel room at an HCCA conference. I did that and passed the CHC exam on the first try. If you're reading this, you're probably trying to do the same thing and I recommend this book for that purpose.

Understand that the brevity of the book is a feature, not a bug. The CHC is simply not the kind of test that is looking for rote memorization and I think a lot of people get tripped up by the fact that this simply isn't the sort of thing you can study for with a deck of flashcards. There really isn't that much raw material and the test is about actually applying that material to situations on the ground. As such, this book is not about being a compliance officer so much as it is about learning to THINK like one.

PS: Another tip, a lot of good information is buried in the glossary, and after you pass the book continues to be useful with its model forms.

this book was long on dollars and short on content. this book is a little less than $1/ page. It gives an amazing amount of appendices to supplement its short content. provides a very fleeting overview of compliance even for a '101' book. If the price was less than half what is being charged then perhaps it would be an ok value. else, bypass this.

An absolute must-have for the Harry Potter fan!

IMPORTANT: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases. This difference isn't as prominent or noticeable as it was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, but still something to keep in mind. Also, to answer a question that has come up quite a bit, this is the FULL BOOK and not an abridged or shortened version.

The overall quality is fantastic. The colors are vibrant and the images are, in my opinion, even better than those in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1).

The best features:
1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy orange hardback with green lettering on the spine.
2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.
3. All chapter intros are illustrated.
4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.
5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains". In Chamber of Secrets (compared to Sorcerer's Stone), some pages even have beautiful patterns over the entire page. One page has a spider-web pattern and is right next to a picture of Aragog. Quite brilliant overall.

I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. Based on the fact that the illustrations for this book were even better than in the first book, I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series even more. Prisoner of Azkaban is next and I'm heartbroken it'll be so long before I get to have it in my collection.

Must have! Phenomenal art!

Just phenomenal! Of course, the story is the amazing series I started reading over a decade ago. But these illustrated versions are just beautiful! The artwork is incredible! There were a few scenes I wish would've been illustrated that weren't but, overall it exceeded my expectations just like the first.

Phenomenal illustrations bring Harry Potter to life in a whole new way!

Before I start this review, can we just take a second and rejoice in the amount of Harry Potter-related stuff we're getting this year? *Screams in excitement*

Ok, Now, on to this review!

I have been anxiously awaiting the release of the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets since I finished the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! Some people might wonder why I'd buy another version of any of the Harry Potter books, but this is an absolute MUST HAVE if you even so much as LOVE Harry Potter and the wizarding world in general. Jim Kay has always brought JK Rowling's wizarding world to life, but these illustrated editions just take it to a whole new, exciting, and fantastic level.

Part of the joy of reading (at least for me) has always been bringing the words on pages alive in my own imagination. This may seem counterintuitive to my raving review, but what if I told you that almost everything illustrated was at the very least close to what I had always imagined? It's probably part of the brilliance of JKR's vibrant descriptions, but it's still pretty cool when you see them.

The illustrated edition of Chamber of Secrets is phenomenal in short. Inside the cover you see the Hogwarts Greenhouses, and it only gets better from there! I would like to say I could totally use LESS of the illustrations of the acromantuals! GROSS! Not only are they all over the contents pages, but there are WAY too many full page(s) photos of these gross spiders! PASS! My two favorites though are the illustrations of the phoenix and of Dobby!

I could laude over the illustrations for a year, but I won't. What I love about this book (and for the whole collection of illustrated editions I hope!) is that this is the version I can see first introducing my (future) children to Harry Potter with. I put these on my bookshelves waiting for the day when I can show my kids the wonderful world that has filled my life with such fun and fantasy.

The book DOES include the full text of Chamber of Secrets in case any of you were wondering, it just also includes some fantastic illustrations from Jim Kay!

If you love Harry Potter, don't hesitate. Collect these editions! You and your family will love this for a long, long time!

Daniel Tudor is from Manchester, England, and graduated with a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University. He has lived in Seoul, Korea for a number of years, and served as The Economist's Korea Correspondent from 2010-2013. His first book, 'Korea: The Impossible Country' received strong praise and has also been translated into Korean, Chinese, Polish, and Thai.

Daniel is a regular columnist for a Korean newspaper, the Joongang Ilbo, and has commented on Korea-related topics many times for the BBC, Al Jazeera, and others. He is also co-founder of The Booth, a small chain of craft beer pubs.

Quite an accurate description of the upper middle class

I am Korean, and bought this book from a local bookstore. It sure is a page-turner for those who are interested in South Korea. The author does a brilliant job describing many aspects of Korean culture. I was very impressed about the author's depth of knowledge and research. However, I must point out that, possibly due to his elite background, his insight and sources are limited to the upper middle class. The majority of Koreans belong to the lower middle/working class, who are now dangerously pushed to the limit with low wage and almost no social security. They wouldn't dream of getting a plastic surgery, buying new gadgets every time they come out, or sending their kids to multiple of expensive Hagwons/English speaking countries as described in the book. Most people simply can't afford such things. Thus the social divide between the two groups are getting bigger and bigger, posing serious threats to Korean society, yet the author fails to recognize it.

I believe this book will be a good guide for English instructors/businessmen hoping to come to Korea, because what they will encounter is the upper middle class. However, if you are looking for up-to-date full information or a thorough analysis of South Korea, you might want to look for additional sources.

Excellent survey of Korean society

Tudor's book is not so much the "inside story of an economic, political, and cultural phenomenon" that the cover proclaims it to be so much as it is a thorough survey of *who* Koreans are and *why* they are so. Anyone can look up the history of Korea's chaebol or its political (and military) history, and merely need notice what's hot in pop music to spot Korea's cultural influence. But Tudor avoids such a facts-only approach and frankly (but lovingly) introduces the reader to the factors that motivate, scare, cheer, and depress the average Cho.

Foreign visitors to Korea often find themselves faced with a language, cuisine, environment, and even climate that is so different from their own that they resign themselves to Korea being too impenetrable (and yes, impossible) to contemplate. A subset of these expats find that two years working at a hagwon gives them an unassailable opinion of the 'fascinating natives' and offer an outsider's deconstruction of Korean society in blog form despite no real intimacy with the people or language. They are right in proclaiming that Korea is interesting, but lack a true understanding. Korean-authored works tend to be well-informed, but often oblivious to what their target readership wants to know. Tudor hits the sweet spot and gives a knowledgable explanation of what a Western audience wants to know (and would find interesting, even if initially they might not be curious).

The book includes current events up through mid-2012 and will surely benefit from an update in a few years as Korea gathers more and more of the world's attention with the PyeongChang Olympics and whatever else may happen. For now (and most likely in the future as well), the book should be the first choice for anyone wishing to learn about modern Korean society.

Rare quality of commentary!

The world has seen many books about countries, cultural regions and growing economies in Asia. Not necessarily about Korea in particular but Japan's longstanding history as a global cultural and economic powerhouse as well as China's recent economic stellar rise and its immense history have attracted pundits, commentators, critics and dubious self-proclaimed experts to share their two cents worth. Most of them shouldn't have.
It is against this backdrop that Mr. Tudor's book is refreshingly insightful and beautiful to read. There are three aspects about it that stand out in particular: Analysis, scope and humility.
1. Mr. Tudor is never satisfied dealing with the subject matter of his book on an observational level. Instead, in each chapter he leaves the level of observation and enters the realm of analysis. He offers surprising, succinct and powerful insights into why Korea is how it is. It never becomes absurd though. Many have tried to do similar things with China (a country in which I have lived and worked for several years). Confucius and the Cultural Revolution have been used to explain every single aspect of contemporary China, however unrelated. Mr. Tudor doesn't fall victim to this obsession. He knows when to warn the reader of the limitations of his own analysis.
2. Mr. Tudor does a brilliant job in presenting Korea from many different viewpoints, including modern pop culture, history, economy and general society. He connects dots that only a true subject matter experts can see. He doesn't present the different aspects of South Korea in isolation but instead shows the reader relations between them. Every chapter of this book hence offer several eye-openers. Also, Mr. Tudor impresses by appearing really savvy in all the areas he covers. He seems young enough to really understand youth and pop culture but at the same time conveys extreme competence when talking about South Korea's history and economy.
3. For me personally, the 3rd aspect is the most important: humility. Frankly, I am tired of the above-mentioned group of 'experts' who more often than not claim omniscience. Mr. Tudor is confidently aware of his status of an observer. He's undoubtedly a very savvy, well informed and sharp observer with much access and deep understanding but he never seems to forget that he's a foreigner living in Korea and not a Korean. He underpins this by carefully quoting other (mostly local) people who have been thinking and writing about the topics covered in this book. He pairs this with a beautifully simple language.

All in all, Mr. Tudor manages to not only present South Korea in a hitherto unseen professionalism, objectivity and detail but to convey why he wrote this book in the first place: Not to build himself a monument but because of his love and enthusiasm for South Korea.

Bridge Between Academics and Practice

This was a timely book since Perceived Organizational Support (POS) has been studied in many aspects since 1986 when the concept was first proposed. It provided a good mix between what the research has shown and how it is relevant to organizations. Managers who are looking for new ways to motivate and engage employees should read this book and apply some of the concepts. Employees want to know that somebody cares.

Finally a good book on agile requirements elicitation

This book is exactly what the sub-title "A Practical Guide to Agile Requirements Discovery" says it is. The book is a very detailed breakdown of the steps that should be taken by Scrum teams that want to succeed.

I have listed the chapters below to give you an overview of the topics the author covers in this book.

Chapter 1. Solving the Right Problem
Chapter 2. Relying on a Stable Foundation
Chapter 3. Discovering Through Short Feedback Loops and Stakeholders' Decrements
Chapter 4. Expressing Desirements with User Stories
Chapter 5. Refining User Stories by Grooming the Product Backlog
Chapter 6. Confirming User Stories with Scenarios
Chapter 7. Automating Confirmation with Acceptance Tests
Chapter 8. Addressing Nonfunctional Requirements
Chapter 9. Conclusion

In the first chapter the author covers how the scrum teams can distinguish requirements from the solution. In other words the what from the hows.

In the second chapter the author shows how to develop guardrails which are basically the artifacts and activities that will keep the project within its defined scope. The examples that the author uses are a healthy team, involvement of all stakeholders, a shared vision, a meaningful common goal, a set of high-level features, and "can-exist" assumption.

In chapter 3 the author really drives home applying the trial and error method for discovering desirements through short feedback loops.

In chapter 4, Expressing Desirements with User Stories, the author does a great job of showing how to create user stories. He does a great job of breaking down the structure of the user story and introducing the questions that you ask when creating them- who, what, and why, questions. The author also touches on the importance of establishing Ubiquitous Language. Ubiquitous Language is a shared team language that defines a certain domain. Chapter 6 also touches on Ubiquitous Language. He ends the chapter by introducing how to use a product backlog to record desirements.

The next chapter, Refining User Stories by Grooming the Product Backlog, is all about roles and activities that need to be in place in order to managing the product backlog correctly. Topics include Managing the Product Backlog, Collaborating to Groom the Product Backlog, Ranking User Stories with a Dot Voting Method, Illustrating User Stories with Storyboards, Sizing User Stories Using Comparison, Splitting User Stories Along Business Values, Tracking User Stories with a Collaboration Board, and Delivering a Coherent Set of User Stories.

Chapter 6 is all about confirming your User Stories by scripting scenarios that validate them. The author also introduces two tools for automating validation. He introduces the Framework for Integrated Test (FIT) and the Given-When-Then syntax the Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) community uses. He also touches on Ubiquitous Language again and its importance.

Chapter 7 is all about automating confirmation, which is done by turning scenarios into acceptance tests. This chapter explains how to make the scenarios "executable" by a computer. The author introduces existing BDD automation frameworks which include Cucumber for Ruby, JBehave for Java, and SpecFlow for Microsoft .NET. I downloaded SpecFlow which is a solid framework backed up by very thorough documentation.

The last chapter before the concluding chapter covers Nonfunctional Requirements (Quality Attributes). Quality attributes are all about tradeoffs and constraints. The author does a great job of explaining quality attributes, showing how they are broken down into internal and external categories, and then applied through constraints (which he calls restrictions).

The two things I like most about this book was the flow of the chapters and the author's recognition of the importance of architecture.

The chapters build on each other so I definitely recommend a cover to cover read of the book. The author has a great writing style, so that is easy to do.

When the author spells out what roles make up a team he includes architects. He defines architects as members of the development team who are responsible for designing the structural foundation upon which the solution is built. Their role is to ensure the development team builds the software right and delivers quality work. I have seen a lot of confusion in Scrum teams when it comes to architecture, because a lot of the Scrum material out there today discounts it.

All in all I found this book a very enjoyable read. If you are involved with agile development teams, you should definitely read this book. The elicitation of requirements is really lacking in most of the agile teams I encounter. This book can help to remedy that.

"Where's the meat??!!"

Have you ever read a book where the first chapter or two are basically introduction before they get to "the good stuff"? This book seemed like it never got past the introduction - I read the first few chapters, and started skimming at chapter 5, wondering when the book was going to get meaty and introduce some good, useful information. By the time I reached the end, I was still wondering that. In the end, it was basically an introduction to Cucumber and Fit(nesse), but if you're already familiar with those, you're not going to learn much new.

Also, the book was written in a style that I would call awkward, at best. "Desirements"??!! Why do we need to invent new words?

Overall, I would be willing to recommend any number of books I haven't read as at least being more promising than this one.

A short little book with good information

A quick, short read, but it's to the point and has some good information in there. There's no one right way to do Scrum, after all, people over processes and tools, right? Anyway, I found the information useful.

Also, don't get hung up on the title, especially the bit about "Executable Specifications...." I thought this Scrum book might go into detail about applying BDD principles in your scrum activities, but BDD wasn't really touched on at all. The author did make a point, however, to go over the planning process, which was somewhat aligned with BDD, but it's a weak association at best.

Anyway, if you want some info on Scrum (i.e. you're new to Scrum), this book has good information. But, it's just information. Please evaluate the information given and see how it might apply (or might not apply, for that matter) to you and your team.
