Finally the kings and queens are shown to be quite interesting!

I use this book when teaching a quick overview of the history of England to children. This book is very kid friendly and adults find it fun and interesting as well. So much for dry old boring history This is a difficult book to find in the U.S. and coming from overseas, my copy was quite abused by the time I received it. But well worth the wait and mail abuse.

My seven year old loves this book it's funny, simply written and beautifully illustrated. The book is appropriate for all ages. This book has helped me nurture my sons interest in history by being such a pleasure to read and easy to cross reference with other material. Fantastic!

About the Author
David Streiner attended the City College of New York, and then did his graduate work in clinical psychology at Syracuse University. In 1968, he joined the newly-formed Department of Psychiatry at McMaster University, and became the Chief Psychologist at the McMaster University Medical Centre. In 1980, he also became a member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster, and was the Deputy Chair of CE&B for two years. He was one of the founding editors of Evidence-based Mental Health, and is currently editor of the Statistical Developments and Applications section of the Journal of Personality Assessment, as well as being on the editorial board of numerous other journals. Geoff Norman attended the University of Manitoba as an undergraduate, graduating with an honours degree in physics in 1965. He did graduate work in nuclear physics, obtaining a PhD in 1970. At that point he began a career in health sciences education, and subsequently obtained an M.A. in educational psychology from Michigan State University in 1977. He joined the faculty at McMaster in 1977, and has remained at McMaster for the next three decades. He has won numerous awards in medical education, including the Hubbard Award of the National Board of Medical Examiners (US), and lifetime achievement awards from the Medical Council of Canada and the American Educational Research Association, among others. In 2001, he was awarded a Canada Research Chair. In 2007, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada. He has published over 200 papers in education, epidemiology, psychiatry and physics, as well as authoring and editing several books.

very nice book, excellent practical advice

I really like this book and wish that I'd found out about it before my psychometrics class in the spring started, because I would have assigned it in a heartbeat. It's got a lot of the kind of practical advice that anyone thinking of creating a scale REALLY needs to hear first, including the #1 bit of advice: Should you make one yourself? For instance, excellent summaries of the work on scale usage biases by Jon Krosnick, Norbert Schwartz, etc., give useful cautionary information for scale constructors. I have a few disagreements---some of the advice about procedures such as some of the scaling methods they mention is out of date, for instance, and the chapters on factor analysis and IRT are a bit weak, but I can cover that with other material. It certainly doesn't detract from the value of the book overall and I've learned a bunch I didn't know reading it. It'll be on the syllabus next time!

Simple .......but yet comprehensive

This is undoubtedly, one of the best books I have read in this area. The authors follow an appropriate sequence in terms of addressing scale development, testing and analyses issues. The best thing about the book is that it is really easy to comprehend and covers all the important areas. I feel it is a "must buy" for professionals in the area of health-related quality of life and outcomes research.

The book is extremely well written by people that know their field. For people interested in psychometry it gives a new perspective applying psychometrics in the health sciences. I found many applications and suggestions that were very useful.

I love this book. The way H Clay Trumbull explains the different Blood Covenants, is simply amazing. If anyone want to understand in depth, the significant, of Blood Covenants, try reading this book.

Thorough yet misleading

This book is definately worth reading as it is VERY thorough in its research on blood covenant with the Bible and ancient peoples. HOWEVER- what I disagree with - is what Mr. Trumbull semms to infer is that God uses blood covenant as it is something ancient people would understand ( similar to God using agricultural metaphors throughout Bible) RATHER than GOD initiated Blood covenant ( and it started w/ Adam and Eve- animals being killed to cover their sin ( animal skins to cover their nakedness rather than leaves- and Mr. Trumbull starts with Cain and Abel- skipping the Adam-Eve record which I find puzzling))It would seem the ancients use and knowledge of blood covenant COULD be the devil counterfeiting/ or distracting from GOD's blood covenant ,God's intention and importance of the PROPER sacrificial blood- Old an NEW testament.

What I found helpful is /was all the ancients knowledge of blood covenant. As modern society- is very 'bloodless" and I don't the modern Christian church really gets it on blood covenant- what a HUGE deal it is- and the blood of Christ. This book will help with this. It is very scholalrly in tone-but worth the work to read it.

Classic reference!

Trumbull breaks new ground in exploring a topic of theological interest which he states 'has been strangely overlooked by biblical critics and biblical commentators generally, in these later centuries.' This is the covenant of blood, a ritual custom of great antiquity and widespread, even universal, pervasiveness. He writes: `The belief seems to have been universal, not only that the blood is the life of the organism in which it originally flows, but that in its transfer from one organism to another the blood retains its life, and so carries with it a vivifying power.'

It isn't through literary exploration alone that this 19th-century scholar elaborates his study. He can boast of his own itinerancy in the Near East while recounting the (often dangerous!) expeditions of others anywhere from Asia to the Americas. As is to be expected across cultures and continents of manifold variegation, the use of the blood in blood-covenant ceremonies is not always the same; it can range anywhere from imbibing to direct physical contact of the openings in the participants, to sprinkling, though it usually consists of some form of intertransfusion. In some cultures a substitutive formula is used such as wine, a symbolism Jesus himself implemented in the institution of the Eucharist. Faint traces of blood-covenant rituals are also found in cultures where no blood is used at all, or any other substitute. The people, however, may be unconscious of the original significance of their practices.

All these customs share a common thread: the bond created by the participants in the act is indissolubly strong, stronger even than biological affinity. Why? As Trumbull explains, `the taking in of another's blood was the acquiring of another's life, with all that was best in that others nature.' To violate the covenant bond was to call against oneself the full fury of cosmic punishment. For instance, those who violated the Mosaic covenant (enacted by sprinkling of animal blood) are said to be `cut off', i.e. their lineage is obliterated through the curse of an untimely death.

In sacrificial ritual animal blood, Trumbull points out, takes the place of human blood. The life of the animal is given to God in the lieu of the devotee's. Therefore the blood/life cannot be consumed. Trumbull reminds us, `it is the life (which the blood is), and not the death (which is merely necessary to the securing of blood), of the victim, that is the means of atonement.' And this is the gravity of the sacrifice, in Christian religion, that God made by his son: 'and this', Trumbull states, 'was the truth of truths which he declared to those whom he instructed.'

Lost in the shuffle

Yesterday, my laundry hamper was full to overflowing demanding attention as I opened this book. I had seen the author on Good Morning America, and this seemed like an interesting story.

As I started to read thoughts of laundry disappeared, as I was riveted by this compelling story, of a little girl who just wanted to be loved by her mother, or a family.

I could not put this book down until I finished.

It was like I was there looking on as she went through these various ordeals/ adventures.

If you are considering adopting or fostering a child, this book is a must. As you read, you will understand what these children have to go through. That understanding brings compassion. You will also understand what would be parents go through because both sides of the story are told effectively.

If you work in childcare services, this ought to be required reading.

If you are like me, this is an inspiring story about surviving and succeeding against the odds. You may notice this story has a mythical quality, reminiscent of other stories like Oliver Twist, a Roald Dahl story, or even Anne of Green Gables or Harry Potter which the author refers to, except this is for real.

It is shocking to me how a system which is designed to protect children, can fail so miserably at times. How is it possible for a home that is only licensed to have two children end up with 10. How come foster children end up living in a trailer? The children do not have a voice that is heard.

I particularly commend Gay Courter her adoptive mother who also persisted against the odds, where some adoptive parents would have given up. She ended up with a remarkable child who has written a remarkable book, who I feel sure will continue to be a voice for foster children, and orphans.

Three little words...with a lot of power behind them

Although I generally like memoirs, too often I get bogged down in boring minutiae of dysfunctional families. This one was different. I was surprised to find I couldn't put it down.

Rhodes-Courter can write. She vividly describes her years in foster care, being totally honest about herself and the families who were paid to care for her. Mercifully, she knows just how far to go before reader fatigue sets in, and she knows exactly where to stop to leave us disturbed but not overwhelmed.

Anyone who read the author's New York Times piece knows the happy ending: Rhodes-Courter was adopted by a loving family that was uniquely qualified to appreciate her gifts and help her grow as a writer and speaker. As a bonus, she gained two older brothers (they look like teddy bear types) and a houseful of cats.

But we're made to realize there was no fairy tale magic. Ashley Rhodes arrived in the Courter family as a scared, suspicious kid. She didn't know how to hug and she was a picky eater who would drive most people mad. She tested her family over and over again.

Gradually, she became a real family member. Her new brothers teased her when she avoided helping with the dishes ("Hey, are you a guest?") Her mother went along with the food fuss. Her dad was, well, a dad. And she admits she came to realize just how lucky she was,

In what may be the most powerful part of the book, Rhodes-Courter asks a very good question. Why do states pay a fortune for foster care instead of subsidizing the birth parents? What would have happened if her own mother had been given money and support to keep her own children? And why does the state ignore reports of abuse in a foster home yet whisk children away from their own parents at the slightest hint of a problem?

Just stay away from this book if you're on deadline. It sucks you in.

Heart-rending memoir with happy ending

Ashley Rhodes-Courter's memoir is must reading for anyone who cares about children and their welfare. This brave young woman's account of the long road she traveled after being forcibly removed from her birth mother's care to eventually finding security with a family who nurtures her in ways she never could have imagined is a heartbreaker. While the often terrifying journey ends well for Ashley, we know there are thousands more "lost" children out there who will never be as smart, as determined--or as lucky. Now twenty-two and a successful crusader for those caught in the foster-care system as she was--almost interminably--Ashley Rhodes-Courter stands as witness that there has to be a better way to deal with the children left behind when "the state" decides their parents are unfit. Three Little Words (they are not the ones you think) is an incredibly well-written tale, all the more powerful for the fact that every word is true.

Slightly misleading...

This book is a wonderful resource, but not necessarily for accurately portraying the music. The piano part listed is an embellished chord melody, which works great if you want to play the song without vocals, but which isn't what Stevie is playing on keys. I haven't gone through everything (obviously! There's 75 tunes!), but I know "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" is in the key of C where Stevie plays it in B and that the intro is not quite right on. I can only imagine it is the same for other tunes. That said, as far as I can tell, they have the right chord changes and that's something that has always thrown me off when trying to transcribe Stevie's work from records. Simply having all the chord changes is invaluable to me and a great learning tool. I've seen a book advertised that is 12 note-for-note transcriptions that will probably satisfy those who want to learn what he's playing, but if you aren't too concerned with playing HIS voicings in the exact same key, this book can be a lot of fun.

Its Alright

This book is great if you want to play the piano and the singing melody on the piano at the same time. What I didnt like about the book was exactly that. I wanted to play the songs on piano like on the cd. Not with the singing on the piano. It makes it harder to play it than if you were just playing the chords like stevie wonder does.

Great anthology!

I have been looking for a comprehesive overview of Sevie's music for piano for quite some time. This book gives a nice coverage of his songs during his career up till 1998. All songs are in the original settings, so certainly not for beginners. The only pity is the fact that the songs are in alphabetical order. I would have preferrred to have them ordered in chronological order per album.
