About the Author

Edward Steichen was an American photographer, painter, designer, and curator. Born in 1879, Steichen emigrated from Luxembourg to the United States with his family in 1881. Steichen began as a self-taught photographer and gained recognition after his work was discovered by photographers Clarence H. White and Alfred Stieglitz. Steichen’s work was often featured in Stieglitz’s influential magazine Camera Work. In 1947, Steichen became the director of MoMA’s photography department. Undoubtedly his most influential and popular exhibition as director was the 1955 show The Family of Man. Presenting what Steichen referred to as a “collective portrait” of humanity, the exhibition featured 503 photographs from 68 countries, 273 of which were taken by amateur photographers.

Carl Sandburg was an American writer, poet, and editor. He was the recipient of three Pulitzer Prizes: one for a biography of Abraham Lincoln and two additional for his poetry. Hailed as a poet whose work connected to a plurality of experiences, Sandburg provided a prologue well suited for Steichen’s universalizing photo narrative.

Absolutely beautiful photo collection. I heard about this collection through a photography art history course and had to find the book. Now it's a fantastic coffee table book and its compelling collection ranges from influential photographers in the early years of artistic photography.

Wonderful songbook of Judy's concert and movie years.

This is an absolutely wonderful collection of show tunes from some of America's best songwriters. Selection includes songs from Judy's movies, television shows, and concert appearances. This is a golden collection of those wonderful Hollywood musical composers, including George Gershwin and most especially, Irving Berlin.
I highly recommend it!

The Essentials series continues, this time for WAIS-IV. Comprehensive, thoughtful, and based on good theory and research, the authors cover every aspect of WAIS-IV construction, administration, and interpretation. PLUS... there is a bonus this time.... a CD with software to do all the STEPS calculations for you! Wish we could get this for WISC-IV. Highly recommended for clinicians using the WAIS-IV.

WAIS-IV assessment book helpful, somewhat

I ordered this book hoping to get assistance in making sense of the large amount of data generated by administering and scoring the test, following my first administration. One attraction of the book was that it comes with a CD program that interprets the data, once you have calculated and entered the standard scores. I wrongly assumed that the program would do automatically what the test manual prescribes for hand-scoring. (The publisher's available scoring program is rather expensive for the number of tests I administer.)
I had some difficulty opening the program, getting error messages. I contacted Wiley IT support and they were helpful in solving the problem.
I had started writing my report before I received the book. When I ran the test scores through the program, for comparison, I soon realized that some of the interpretation methodology differed from that described in the WAIS-IV manual. For example, the criteria for determining if there are significant differences between subtests within an index, (which according to the book renders an index "not interpretable") are different. The method in the book has a higher numeric level required for significant differences.
That led to some confusion on my part on how to and whether to combine the two approaches or stick with one, which I finally resolved by determining which was more helpful for making recommendations for the client.
If you are comfortable with the various statistical underpinnings of test interpretation and want to do in-depth interpretation, you will probably like this book. It offers an alternative, 5-index approach called the Keith method, in addition to the WAIS 4-index approach. It also offers additional clinical clusters based on various theoretical models of intelligence.

About the Author

Donald E. Carlucci has been an engineer at the U.S. Army Armament, Research, Development and Engineering Center, Picatinny Arsenal, since May 1989. He is currently the U.S. Army senior scientist for computational structural modeling based at Picatinny. He holds a doctor of philosophy in mechanical engineering (2002) and a master of engineering (mechanical) (1995) degree from the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1987, he received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Carlucci is an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Sidney S. Jacobson was a researcher, designer, and developer of ammunition and weapons at the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey for 35 years. He rose from junior engineer to associate director for R&D at the arsenal. In 1972, he was awarded an Arsenal Educational Fellowship to study continuum mechanics at Princeton University where he received his second MS degree (1974). He earned a master of science in applied mechanics from Stevens Institute of Technology (1958) and a bachelor of arts in mathematics from Brooklyn College (1951). He retired in 1986 but maintains his interest in the field through teaching, consulting, and lecturing.

A complete description of all phases from gun to the target

This discussion concerning how a projectile starts its flight, flies to the target, and does things to the target is rather complete. My expertise is more in terminal ballistics (what happens against steel armor), but I learned a number of things I had not found previously in any other source. The only thing that I would like is a set of tables giving common examples of the values of various quantities used in the formulae, such as the "Hugonoit Elastic Limit" used in the metal armor always-ricochet angle formulae, for example -- a formula cannot be tested if the values necessary to solve it are not available. Tables for chemical parameters are included, but not the needed metallurgical parameters. Alternatively, sources for finding these parameters could be included in the text. Minor point, though.

I was so glad to hear Julie Perry decided to rerelease The Insiders' Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess completely updated and revised. This is the first book I read about yachting when I joined the industry and have kept it on each boat I've worked as a well-used reference.
Julie's step-by-step of how-to-get-a-job-on-a-yacht and what to expect should be read by everyone entertaining the idea of jumping on board. She shares her first hand knowledge of what life is like on a yacht and what the job entails.
If yachting looks glamorous to you, BUY THIS BOOK! Julie tells it like it is and you will have a much broader understanding of what is required of you onboard after being hired. Her straight-forward, easy-to-navigate style on the page will walk you through the courses needed, who to talk to, where to go, and what to do to get hired.

Great Book!

I never read a book so fast in my life. This book was so helpful to get a clear understanding on how to get into the yachting industry and becoming a stewardess. My favorite parts are the I Must Confess sections throughout the book (I wish there was more!). I always enjoy hearing about people's experiences. There was humor throughout the chapters which really kept me intrigued in reading. Being a writer myself for a local boating magazine in New York, I always try to add humor to my stories. People love to laugh, and you will most likely laugh when reading Julie's book! I definitely recommend reading this to whoever is interested in this line of work. If you are not interested, then you can still get great stories and information about the yachting life. I really want to become a stewardess because being out on the water and on boats is my passion. I just have to finished college first and then I am on my way at starting my future in the yachting industry. I will have this book along side me to help me through the path to success!

A MUST have GUIDE for all aspiring yachties!

This book contains ALL you need to know to get in to the luxury yacht industry! I, too, am a midwestern lady with a gypsy soul, and was unfulfilled with my 8-5 desk job. I was lucky enough to meet a gentleman in the industry who led me to Julie's book....I ordered it immediately! I've never read a book so fast and had a hard time putting it down! Aside from all the helpful "how to" information, I LOVED reading Julie's confessions from her years aboard these vessels and would often envision myself in her shoes. This book is so well written, that as I read it (multiple times) I felt as though Julie was a personal friend coaching me, encouraging me and helping me to pave out this new path. I am now down in Florida working my way towards a career in the industry! A HUGE thanks to Julie for this book and all her help! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to get in to the industry....or even anyone who is just curious about the private luxury yacht industry!

Great pictures but . . .

I have a second edition of Atlas of Human Anatomy (Netter), which was given to me by my friend. I liked the book but sometimes there was too much drawn or labeled on one plate and was it was annoying if I wanted to see where just one nerve, artery etc. went to or came from. So I went online and saw this book, saw the 5 star rating, and was told by someone who used it that they really liked it. Since my Netter edition was published in 1997 I figured that I would spend some money on a new Atlas that used a computer to draw its images instead of paint (sorry traditional artist). When I received this book I was very pleased with the images, they are beautiful and clear. There are several angles of a particular section so you can see a structure in many different ways. They also split up the sections into nerve arteries and veins, which is great. With so many positive things why am I giving it a 3 (well it really should be 3.5)? Well when I started using the book in my second semester of anatomy I found out what sucks about this book is the labeling. Yes I am aware of the other books by Thieme that are specifically for neuroanatomy section, and etc. but there are some things in this book that should have been labeled without me spending more money to get it (especially loan money). For example, Lamina Terminalis, pararectal fossa were all labeled in my 1997 atlas but not in this atlas. I am mad that I paid money to get less labeling especially after so many people gave it such a good review. Some people may argue, those are just little details left out but I would say how stupid are you going to look and feel if a neurologist ask you where the Lamina Terminalis is and you don't know? Sure you can fill in some of the gaps with a google search but you could do that for all your anatomy structures in which case why are you even thinking about buying an atlas? They also show contributions to the pudendal nerve from S1 in figure 27.11(B) when it should only be S2,S3, and S3 contributions.

Bottom line this book is not without errors but is still a good buy. This book has great pictures (yes they are better than Netter) but to get the most out of this book you might get irritated a few times and realize the structure that you have to know for your skills exam or written portion may not be labeled (but it will be in Netter). I know there are errors in Netter and I still like this book better. I just am harboring some resentment that this book is not as perfect as everyone made it seem and I probably would have given it a 4 if I hadn't expected so much.

pg. 577, Table 37.12 that the figure labeled "A" shows the investing layer (yellow line) splitting to enclose the sternocleidomastoid muscle anteriorly but posteriorly it does not split to enclose the trapezius muscle (which it should) as the table indicates

Pg 576 fig. 37.29 A - there was no line demarcating the omoclavicular triangle and the label "omoclavicular triangle" is therefore just pointing to the posterior belly of the omohyoid muscle.

Pg 576 fig. 37.29 A - The midline is a defining landmark that separates the two anterior triangles and it is missing from the figure. This is a problem because the two submental triangles and muscular triangles are labeled as a singular "submental triangle" and "muscular triangle" suggesting that there is only one.

Pg 576 fig. 37.29 B - there is a vertical line that is used to distinguish the occipital triangle from the omoclavicular triangle, however, that vertical line is not the correct distinguishing mark between the two triangles. The vertical line should have been an oblique line across the posterior belly of the omohyoid muscle. Subsequently the "Omoclavicular triangle" should be changed to accurately point out the now corrected triangle.

Best Atlas Ever!

I have bought at least three other atlases before getting this one. My professor recommended that I use this book for gross anatomy and found this to be the best one out there. I have also used other atlases in addition to the ones I have bought and still feel the same way. Two features that made this atlas amazing: detail of the illustrations and the charts. The illustrations are very precise and look almost like a real human. However, unlike true picture atlases (those that actually use cadavers), the lines are much easier to see and show the normal anatomy in clear images. The charts are great since they include the origin, insertion, action, and innervation for each muscle on that page along with including some other details that are extremely useful. No other atlas I have used has been so beneficial. I highly recommend this for anyone who is going into medicine or needing an atlas for anatomy!

Breaks anatomy down into simple, easy-to-understand concepts

As many have said before me, this atlas breaks down anatomy conceptually,
into small, easy-to-understand chunks.

Whereas Netter will present you a "topography" view that shows everything all at once,
this book divides it up, so you learn bones first, then muscles, then vasculature, then nerves etc.
It also chunks muscles into easy-to-understand layers or groups.
You learn it all bit by bit, concept by concept.
The end of each chapter sums it all up with some pretty good topography pictures.

I do wish they had more topography pictures that showed everything as it looks in the body,
because that's how it'll actually look in a real dissection.
Netter is superior in this regard.
If you have the money and you really want to learn anatomy, get yourself an old Netter in addition to this book, and you'll have the best of both worlds.

Overall, the book is fantastic. The pictures are indeed GORGEOUS, and the material is presented in a way that is extremely helpful to a first-time learner. I highly recommend it!

King Tut

This book is a very interesting story.I would recommend it for 3rd grade and above.The only thing I did not like about it was it did not have a lot of information on king tut.It mostly just had info on Egypt.Other than that I think it was a wonderful book with great vocabulary. The author really described things very well and made me feel like I was there.I loved the pictures with great detail . If you were doing a history report on king Tut or Egypt this book would come in handy.Thank you for reading my review and I hope you decide to read this book.

The best one yet!

The best one yet! Having read and worked extensively with the material provided in the author's previous self-hypnosis books, I wondered how much "new" there would be for me in this latest release. The answer is...a tremendous amount! Very apparent is what I would call "maturation" of the author's self-hypnosis techniques, as well as his understanding of HOW and WHY these techniques work. The background discussions of such things as hypnosis in general, the placebo effect and factors critical for behavioral change, are scholarly and important to the book, overall, yet easy to understand and not off-putting. Of course, the scripts form the centerpiece of this book, and here, again, the author has taken his work to a new height. The breadth of those offered is amazing, and many of them will have universal appeal. Clearly, each script has been carefully constructed for maximum appeal and impact. I'm happy to see that Forbes has included scripts that target some medical problems like eczema, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia. These are ailments known to include a psychogenic component and therefore, likely to respond to "mind therapies" such as hypnosis. Importantly, the scripts all come from a "positive," rather than a "negative" (e.g., "don't do that") perspective, which makes them enjoyable to work with, and undoubtedly, will contribute to their potential for success. This new book includes four "inductions" (the part you read prior to the specific problem script), a feature which I found particularly attractive and helpful. (I understand the value of repetition in the hypnotic process, but being confined to one induction can become boring, especially if you use Forbes' self-hypnosis methods regularly.) With this new book, I'm finding it hard to adhere to the author's suggestion to work with only one script at any one time. It's like being in a candy store faced with many delicious possibilities! One last thing...as per the book's title, the scripts are advertised as "life changing." I believe this to be true because my own life was dramatically transformed (for the better) by hypnosis with Forbes. I highly recommend this book, and I predict that it will go on to top Forbes' earlier works and become a classic in the field of hypnotherapy.

Best book I have read all year, no question.

I just turned 50 and I’ve heard about hypnosis many times over the years but, to be honest, I never really gave it much thought or respect. That all changed about 5 years ago when a colleague of mine went through a quick and drastic change because of hypnosis. He was an alcoholic and, when he drank alcohol, he also smoked cigarettes. He knew it was a problem and went to a hypnotherapist for help, seeing him for 2 sessions over 2 days. That was 5 years ago and he hasn’t had a drink or smoked a cigarette since, something that still amazes me to this day.

It’s because of this that I picked up ‘Self Hypnosis As You Read’. It’s actually the sequel to another book written by author Forbes Robbins Blair called ‘Instant Self Hypnosis’ and, now that I’ve read this book, I’m quite eager to find and read the first.

Both books have an incredibly interesting proposition that the author, an accomplished hypnotherapist, discovered on his own; anyone, no matter who they are or what they believe, can hypnotize themself while they read words out loud. I’m talking about reading a book with your eyes wide open and going into a hypnotic state while doing it. Indeed, both of his books have allowed thousands of people to self-hypnotize in the comfort of their own home and that would now include me.

Now, frankly, if you would have told me that this was possible before I read Blair’s book I would probably have laughed in contempt (or at least giggled a little bit) but, after having read the book and actually using his techniques on myself, I am completely convinced that his technique works. In fact, I’m amazed at how easy it was and at some of the results that I’ve already had in my life after reading his book.

As I was reading his book (specifically, the parts meant to be read for self-hypnosis) I actually went into a relaxed and hypnotized state. (It was really something.) Blair’s book gives 42 specific goals that you can address using his technique. As of now I have used 2 of them including “Override the Fear of Rejection” and “Tinnitus Relief” and, no lie, my tinnitus has gone down considerably as well as the fear of rejection that I have had for many years. (I’m a writer and a former chiropractor and I thought it was part and parcel of both.)

‘Self Hypnosis As You Read’ was written for the layman and as such it is extremely easy to understand, easy to read and also very well written to boot. I have already purchased 2 more copies to send to a friend of mine and my ex-wife, both of whom suffer from a couple of problems that Blair’s book addresses.

Many people have the same bias towards hypnotherapy that I used to have but, if that’s you, I can say with 100% conviction that this book has opened my eyes to a new and amazing idea. Not only that but it has actually helped me and I look forward to using it for a number of other problem areas in my life.

At the end of the day, it certainly is a heck of a lot less expensive than any other kind of therapy I have ever used and, better yet, it actually works. Highly recommended.

The best book on hypnosis because it works!

I have read all of Forbes Robbins Blair's books and the latest SELF HYPNOSIS AS YOU READ (42 Life Changing Scripts) is by far his greatest gift to the community. I am a big believer in hypnotherapy. I know it works. Forbes Robbins Blair makes it accessible and easy to anyone who wants to learn. Most people think that in order for hypnosis to work they have to go into some deep trance. Not true. He makes it simple and gives you the tools to attract whatever you want in your life by connecting you with your subconscious mind. Once I understood this my life changed. I didn't have to pretend anymore to feel a certain way or "act as if" to convince myself of something. Through SELF HYPNOSIS AS YOU READ I got the confidence I needed to attract so many amazing things especially with my career. I keep the book next to my bed and every night I choose a different chapter to work on. Sometimes I do the same exercises for a week or more on something I really need help with like achieving my potential in the workplace or reducing stress levels in my body. I've given the book to several friends and family as gifts. I get more thank you notes for this book than just about anything else I've passed along or gifted to anyone, it's that's amazing. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for new ways to empower yourself, heal and thrive.
