The best one yet!

The best one yet! Having read and worked extensively with the material provided in the author's previous self-hypnosis books, I wondered how much "new" there would be for me in this latest release. The answer is...a tremendous amount! Very apparent is what I would call "maturation" of the author's self-hypnosis techniques, as well as his understanding of HOW and WHY these techniques work. The background discussions of such things as hypnosis in general, the placebo effect and factors critical for behavioral change, are scholarly and important to the book, overall, yet easy to understand and not off-putting. Of course, the scripts form the centerpiece of this book, and here, again, the author has taken his work to a new height. The breadth of those offered is amazing, and many of them will have universal appeal. Clearly, each script has been carefully constructed for maximum appeal and impact. I'm happy to see that Forbes has included scripts that target some medical problems like eczema, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia. These are ailments known to include a psychogenic component and therefore, likely to respond to "mind therapies" such as hypnosis. Importantly, the scripts all come from a "positive," rather than a "negative" (e.g., "don't do that") perspective, which makes them enjoyable to work with, and undoubtedly, will contribute to their potential for success. This new book includes four "inductions" (the part you read prior to the specific problem script), a feature which I found particularly attractive and helpful. (I understand the value of repetition in the hypnotic process, but being confined to one induction can become boring, especially if you use Forbes' self-hypnosis methods regularly.) With this new book, I'm finding it hard to adhere to the author's suggestion to work with only one script at any one time. It's like being in a candy store faced with many delicious possibilities! One last thing...as per the book's title, the scripts are advertised as "life changing." I believe this to be true because my own life was dramatically transformed (for the better) by hypnosis with Forbes. I highly recommend this book, and I predict that it will go on to top Forbes' earlier works and become a classic in the field of hypnotherapy.

Best book I have read all year, no question.

I just turned 50 and I’ve heard about hypnosis many times over the years but, to be honest, I never really gave it much thought or respect. That all changed about 5 years ago when a colleague of mine went through a quick and drastic change because of hypnosis. He was an alcoholic and, when he drank alcohol, he also smoked cigarettes. He knew it was a problem and went to a hypnotherapist for help, seeing him for 2 sessions over 2 days. That was 5 years ago and he hasn’t had a drink or smoked a cigarette since, something that still amazes me to this day.

It’s because of this that I picked up ‘Self Hypnosis As You Read’. It’s actually the sequel to another book written by author Forbes Robbins Blair called ‘Instant Self Hypnosis’ and, now that I’ve read this book, I’m quite eager to find and read the first.

Both books have an incredibly interesting proposition that the author, an accomplished hypnotherapist, discovered on his own; anyone, no matter who they are or what they believe, can hypnotize themself while they read words out loud. I’m talking about reading a book with your eyes wide open and going into a hypnotic state while doing it. Indeed, both of his books have allowed thousands of people to self-hypnotize in the comfort of their own home and that would now include me.

Now, frankly, if you would have told me that this was possible before I read Blair’s book I would probably have laughed in contempt (or at least giggled a little bit) but, after having read the book and actually using his techniques on myself, I am completely convinced that his technique works. In fact, I’m amazed at how easy it was and at some of the results that I’ve already had in my life after reading his book.

As I was reading his book (specifically, the parts meant to be read for self-hypnosis) I actually went into a relaxed and hypnotized state. (It was really something.) Blair’s book gives 42 specific goals that you can address using his technique. As of now I have used 2 of them including “Override the Fear of Rejection” and “Tinnitus Relief” and, no lie, my tinnitus has gone down considerably as well as the fear of rejection that I have had for many years. (I’m a writer and a former chiropractor and I thought it was part and parcel of both.)

‘Self Hypnosis As You Read’ was written for the layman and as such it is extremely easy to understand, easy to read and also very well written to boot. I have already purchased 2 more copies to send to a friend of mine and my ex-wife, both of whom suffer from a couple of problems that Blair’s book addresses.

Many people have the same bias towards hypnotherapy that I used to have but, if that’s you, I can say with 100% conviction that this book has opened my eyes to a new and amazing idea. Not only that but it has actually helped me and I look forward to using it for a number of other problem areas in my life.

At the end of the day, it certainly is a heck of a lot less expensive than any other kind of therapy I have ever used and, better yet, it actually works. Highly recommended.

The best book on hypnosis because it works!

I have read all of Forbes Robbins Blair's books and the latest SELF HYPNOSIS AS YOU READ (42 Life Changing Scripts) is by far his greatest gift to the community. I am a big believer in hypnotherapy. I know it works. Forbes Robbins Blair makes it accessible and easy to anyone who wants to learn. Most people think that in order for hypnosis to work they have to go into some deep trance. Not true. He makes it simple and gives you the tools to attract whatever you want in your life by connecting you with your subconscious mind. Once I understood this my life changed. I didn't have to pretend anymore to feel a certain way or "act as if" to convince myself of something. Through SELF HYPNOSIS AS YOU READ I got the confidence I needed to attract so many amazing things especially with my career. I keep the book next to my bed and every night I choose a different chapter to work on. Sometimes I do the same exercises for a week or more on something I really need help with like achieving my potential in the workplace or reducing stress levels in my body. I've given the book to several friends and family as gifts. I get more thank you notes for this book than just about anything else I've passed along or gifted to anyone, it's that's amazing. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for new ways to empower yourself, heal and thrive.

How to manage “everyday craziness” whenever and wherever you encounter it

As Mark Goulston explains, he experienced an epiphany years ago when he went to a meeting for estate planners who needed advice about helping families in crisis. "I expected the event to be a little dry, but instead, I was mesmerized. I found out that just like me, these people have to 'talk to crazy' every day. In fact, nearly every issue they discussed involved clients acting completely nuts...That's when it dawned on me that everyone -- including you -- has this problem. I'm betting that nearly every day, you deal with at least one irrational person...And that's what this book is all about: talking to crazy." That is, interacting with what he characterizes as "everyday crazy."

More specifically:

o They can’t see the world clearly.
o They say or think things that make no sense.
o They make decisions and take actions that aren’t in their best interests.
o They become downright impossible when you try to guide them back to the side of reason.

As I began to work my way through Goulston’s lively as well as eloquent narrative, I was again reminded of a scene in the Cheers television series when Frasier Crane, psychiatrist, patiently listens to Cliff Clavin, a mailman, babble on incoherently about the first Thanksgiving. "It took place between the ancient Egyptians and aliens from a distant galaxy." Eventually, Crane asks, "Cliff, what color is the sky in your world?" More recently, during the last holiday season at a party my wife and I attended, the host pointed out to several of us that very few penguins are left-handed. He was sober…and quite serious.

Goulston shares what he has learned about how to handle much more serious situations, situations that have potentially significant consequences if not resolved. "Maybe it's a boss who wants the impossible. Maybe it's a demanding parent or a hostile teen or a manipulative coworker or a neighbor who's always in your face." At one time or another, most people have encountered -- in an everyday situation -- a spouse or friend who screams at them, a child who says "I hate you" or "I hate myself," an aging parent who says "You don't care about me," someone at work who has a meltdown, and/or a supervisor who is a bully. These really are difficult situations that can be made even worse by an inappropriate response.

One of Goulston’s most valuable insights stresses the importance of following a process that is easy to chart but for most of us, very difficult to follow: “The Sanity Cycle”:

1. Recognize that the person you’re dealing with is unwilling and/or unable to think rationally/be reasonable in the current situation.

2. Identify that person’s mo0dus operandi – the specific ways(s) that person acts out their craziness.

3. Don’t take the craziness personally. Realize that it isn’t about you. Rather, it’s all about the person who is obviously very upset and probably angry.

4. Talk with the irrational person, leaning into the craziness by entering the other person’s world calmly and with an intention to be helpful.

NOTE: All of the major research studies (at least of which I am aware) indicate that during a face-to-face interaction, about 80% of impact is determined by tone o0f voice and body language; only about 20% (if that) is determined by what is said.

5. Demonstrate your good will, that you are an ally rather than a threat, by listening calmly and empathetically but NOT, I presume to add, in a way that could be taken as condescendingly as the person vents. Make eye contact and listen with attention and (yes) patience as well as purpose.

6. Help to guide the person to a more rational way of thinking. By letting off steam, they may calm down and appreciate the fact that you care and want to be helpful. These are the whats of the cycle. Goulston thoroughly explains the HOW of each of them.

“The majority of the techniques I teach in this book follow these steps (although there are variations, and you’ll sometimes veer completely off this path when you’re dealing with bullies, manipulators, or sociopaths). That’s because the Sanity Cycle is powerful magic.”

Mark Goulston is determined to do all he can to "heal the world one conversation at a time" and hopes that everyone who reads this book will be well-prepared as well as sufficiently courageous to "help make that dream come true."

A Powerful Tool for Dealing With Problem People

While reading this book I recalled the short poem of Ogden Nash, “One would be in less danger from the wiles of a stranger, If one’s own kin and kith were more fun to be with.” It is a fact of life that at times some of our closest relations are just not fun to be with. You might say they are a bit crazy and tend to drive us in the same direction. If you have people in your life that at times act irrational, that you find impossible to deal with, then this book will definitely help out.

Dr. Mark Goulston, author of Talking to Crazy, is a psychiatrist who has devoted his professional life to listening to and talking to crazy. The book primarily gives guidance for dealing with the garden variety of crazy – the crazy you encounter with your relationship partner, your co-worker or your children or parents. But he does devote a section to dealing with the more serious mental issues and when you need to enlist the help of a professional.

The book is divided into five sections. In Section One, Dr. Goulston introduces the basic concepts of Talking to Crazy. In Section Two he invites the reader to face their own crazy – to do a little self-examination and understand how they may be contributing to the crazy of the other person(s). Section Three contains fourteen different tactics for Talking to Crazy. Section Four gets more specific and brings the Crazy down to the personal relationship level. Section Five covers how to recognize the need for professional help, the different levels of help, how to research and select a provider and how to get the person to actively engage with the process.

Dr. Goulston writes in a very engaging style. The book is fascinating to read because it presents so many real life situations – many of which most readers will be able to relate to. Dr. Goulston give enough of the psychology to help you understand the tactic but never too much to slow down or bore the reader.

At the end of each chapter is a "Usable Insight" - a short insight into what was covered in that chapter. Two of my favorite insights were:
"When you look into people's eyes with the sole purpose of understanding them instead of judging or maneuvering them, they no longer have a reason to keep their guard up." And "What you tell a person is less important than what you enable the person to tell you."

The tactics are well thought out and have been tested and proven many times in the author’s own work. While this is a quick and easy read, I doubt that you will be able to implement any of the tactics after the first read. I can say that I got a much better understanding of some people’s behavior from reading the book. But to put any of the concepts into practice will take a lot of study and a few “dry runs”.

I do believe that you can gradually begin to implement the lessons from Dr. Goulston and quickly see improvement in your relationships. But some of the hard core crazy will take a lot of work. Just go back and study the concepts and continue working.

I’ve recommended this book to dozens of people. Very worthwhile reading.

Maybe the irrational person isn't so irrational after all

We all know what it is to try and deal with the irrational person. The challenge is that the irrational person never views him or her self as irrational. Mark gives some great advice in this book, something that seems akin to playing Aikido with the irrational person. Rather than fight or argue, simply lean in, match who they are and redirect the energy into something more useful. In an odd way, its a bit like becoming their partner in order to help them learn a more effective way.

Great Expectations

I love the cover of this book! The artwork is beautiful and captures the time period and essence of the book well. Unfortunately, I didn't love the book. Pip drove me crazy because he was so selfish, ungrateful, inconsiderate, mean, and lazy. I did like Joe, Herbert, and Wemmick, though. They added the selflessness, love, loyalty, and kindness that Pip didn't have. The language of the book takes awhile to get used to, and there are parts I just had to plow through. As their lives cross and double back again, the likes of Eugene Debs, Thomas Edison, and Andrew Carnegie make cameo appearances.

One I always wanted to read - finally did it!

This is one of those "must read" books that you hear about in any advanced English classes. While Fitzgerald wrote about the wealthy, Dos Passos wrote the stories of those on the other end of the spectrum.
First - a note on the physical book itself - it is a wonderful tangible thing. The Library of America has produced a beautiful tome - high quality paper, binding, even the red ribbon placekeeper (remember those?). Despite being nearly 1300 pages, it is comfortable to hold and a joy to read.
The stories themselves vary from ne'er do well idlers to the upwardly mobile. Reading these from end to end, you can feel Dos Passos gradually changing from a socialist world view to his eventual Republican views (yes - he went from Red in the old sense to a Red-stater). Towards the end, I feel he might almost have embraced Ayn Rand, as he clearly viewed the Russians/Communists as a poor option to American Democracy.
Throughout, the book could serve as a textbook for MADD, with many of the protagonists undone by their descent into drink, or simply failing to make progress through lapses into benders where they lose everything they saved.
Worth reading to get a feel for how the poor and lower middle classes lived from the late 1800's through WWI and up to just before the Great Depression (highly foreshadowed, but just beyond the end of the last novel).
Dos Passos idiosyncratic style of combining adjectives and nouns ("shellshredded woods", "upperclasslooking young man") is jarring at first, but feels natural after a while. The injections of "Newsreel" headlines (or headline fragments, anyway) and the odd "Camera" sections sometimes help frame the stories and sometimes seem forced.
Is he a great writer? I am not convinced, but then I am not that sure that Fitzgerald was either. Both have written fairly straight-forward story-driven novels. Dos Passos people generally feel more real and certainly you can picture yourself meeting these folks and discussing politics and economics with Dos Passos' characters.
If you want a good sense of how everyday people lived in this time, then U.S.A. will give you a very good grounding.

Dos Passos had his finger on the pulse of America

Before reading U.S.A. it would help to learn something about John Dos Passos. At the back of this edition is a Chronology which serves this purpose. The wealth of experience Dos Passos obtained in America and abroad, from his earliest childhood until his death in 1970, serves to illustrate that the trilogy was written with an air of authenticity and expertise that very few works of historical fiction possess. Knowing about the author's experiences before, during, and after WW1, his social and political leanings, his personal friendships, successes, and failures, help the reader not only in understanding the inspiration for some of the fictional characters in the books, but to understand the choices made (and biases for or against) the historical figures presented in fairly extensive vignettes that are interspersed between the fictional narratives throughout the work. It also aids in understanding the "Camera Eye" sections..personal musings of Dos Passos, in stream of consciousness style, about events that transpired in his own life during the time in question. He had his finger on the pulse of America during a critical time in it's history.

U.S.A. was not originally intended as a trilogy, but as 3 individual novels..The 42nd Parallel, 1919, and The Big Money. The idea to publish the 3 books as a trilogy, was made by the author and his publisher in 1938 (2 years after The Big Money was published). The work in total covers the first 3 decades of the 20th century, spanning the period from just after the Spanish American War to the great Crash of 1929, with the 1st World War serving as a pivot point upon which much of the action revolves. Highlighted within this time frame are events and circumstances which affected Dos Passos deeply..not only the Great War in Europe where he drove an ambulance and witnessed first hand the horrors of war, but the growth of organized labor in the U.S. (Dos Passos was a supporter of the Wobblies), the Sacco and Vanzetti case (Dos Passos interviewed both and firmly believed in their innocence), the rise of Soviet Communism (which the author soon came to reject as it polluted the labor movement), and the economic imbalances during the boom period of the Roaring 20s which led inevitably to the big Crash. The narrative isn't linear and straightforward, but experienced through the lives of various fictional characters in the books, some of which intersect in later parts of the work. In this manner the telling of history is enriched through the intellectual and emotional raveling of a range of minds, some ordinary, some a bit more than ordinary, as they mature..struggle to survive, succeed, and fail in relationships and in careers..as they dream, and see those dreams shattered..as they live and sometimes die, oblivious to the slow, cold grip of circumstance tightening around them..and through this method, we as readers can relate to them, can empathize with them, even if at times, we find ourselves despising them.

The 3 novels can stand alone, but the full effect is only experienced together. The only quibble I have is that you get so wrapped up in these individual characters that you miss some of the early ones that disappear in the later books. For example, the character of Mac dominates The 42nd Parallel, but his story ends somewhere in Mexico at the end of that volume. I yearned to know what happened to him later. It would have been nice to have a coda at the end of U.S.A. describe what happened to the characters who survived. It also is difficult leaving the narrative of one character, and getting back to another whose story was interrupted much earlier in the book. You often have to go back and read the last page or pages of that character's earlier narrative to refresh your memory of what happened.

U.S.A. is arguably the greatest literary work concerning the early 20th century American experience. It has been called The Great American Novel, although that is certainly open to debate. Some critics find it too ambitious, comprehensive, bloated, and prejudiced to have earned that accolade. Criticism is subjective of course, but to me, U.S.A. is a great and important piece of art and history, and anyone who cares about such things should read it and come to their own conclusion.

This is a handsome edition of the entire work, the three-volume classic that won a wide readership, critical acclaim, and put Dos Passos on the cover of Time magazine in the late 1930s (to Hemingway's chagrin). It is one of the most innovative, imaginative and original narratives in modern English fiction and a vivid canvas of the U.S. in the first quarter or so of the 20th century. Dos Passos later changed his politics, moving to the right, but his leftist orientation while writing USA does not diminish its social or literary importance.

Forced to purchase

In this day and age, I can't remember when I last looked something up in a manual that I couldn't find online in a fraction of a second. The only reason I purchased this microwave sized manual was due to the fact that it was required for my licensing exam. This is just another scheme by those antiquated businessmen in our midst who find it necessary to test our skills in such a way that even they would find absurd if placed in the same predicament.
